The morning line: Round 1

Brown outdraws Lostroh and Marchi; Mauney could take the round on Chester

LAS VEGAS (October 30, 2009) - Going into the World Finals, everyone is geared up for some excitement. Here's where you are likely to get it in Round 1:

The Odds-On Round 1 Favorites:

Mike Lee on Soulja Boy:
Soulja boy hasn't appeared on the BFTS since April, so fans haven't seen him in a while. Soulja is small, fast, and spins like few bulls you will ever see. Ridden 10 times for an average score of around 90.5, he is enough bull to win this round on. He is ridden more than 50 percent of the time by top riders, and Mike Lee is better than most top riders. If he knows how to work fast, this will be electric.

Zack Brown on Pearl Snap:
Zack is the fourth man in a three-man race for the World Championship, and in Round 1 he's already made a bit of a move - he's out-drawn two of the three guys ahead of him. Pearl Snap is money. Like Soulja Boy, he is ridden often and for lots of points. He got Zack on the ground in a previous meeting in 2008, but don't look for that to happen again.

J.B. Mauney on Chester:

J.B. is the guy that Zack did NOT out-draw. Chester is a favorable matchup for most left-handed guys, and few left-handed guys ride as well as .JB.

Beau Hill on Hawaiian Ivory
Beau has been on a hot streak lately, and this bull has been on a hot streak his whole career. These two met in 2008 in Santa Maria, Calif., at a Challenger Tour event for a score of 88.5 points, and I would expect Beau to ride him again.

The Round 1 Honorably Mentioned:

Renato Nunes on Maverick:

Great bull – it’s on Renato to make the whistle. If he does, it could be Top 5 in the round at least.

Robson Palermo on Black Gold:

Should be a qualified ride, and it’s on the bull to bring his A-game. These two met for 87 points in Worcester, but 87 shouldn’t be enough today.

Brian Canter on Rio Grande:
Question marks on both sides. Bull has limited history, but what numbers he does have say he’s good enough for a round win. Everyone knows how capable Brian Canter is, but he’s ridden 3 out of his last 15.

Rocky McDonald on Big Iron:
This should result in a score, but will it be high enough? At times Big Iron has brought big scores – other times not.

Dustin Elliott on Outta Da Blue:
Dustin is the question mark here. He’s bucked off this bull before.

Ross Coleman on Cat Man Do:
Anyone on Cat Man Do has a shot at the round win. He’s noticeably better for lefties, though, and Ross isn’t one. If he can stay aboard, this will be a high score.

Austin Meier on Baja’s Live Wire:
Not much history on the bull, but looks favorable for Austin to score big.

The World Leaders:

Already mentioned J.B. and Zack – so let’s take a look at the two who drew the short straws.

Guilherme Marchi on Monkey Blood:

This bull doesn’t get ridden very often, and even less often by right-handed riders. Of course, busting bull posers is what Marchi makes a living doing, so either this bull will test him, or Marchi will make him look silly.

Kody Lostroh on Red Kat:
This bull has only been ridden once on the BFTS – for 87.5 points. But he’s been ridden three times out of 33 attempts in the PBR at all levels. One of the 30 guys who ate dirt on him? Kody Lostroh in Dallas back in January on a bad day for both of them, really. Hard to say what might happen here, but if it works out in Kody’s favor it still may not be enough bull to win the round on.

The Rookies:

Caleb Sanderson on Wrangler’s Rock Star:

Caleb is the rookie most likely to make up some ground on Cody Nance in the Daisy Rookie of the Year Race. This bull is just fantastic. In fact, this matchup is nearly as promising as the favorites in this round.

Cody Nance on Nasty Town:

Cody is the rookie most likely to add to his own lead. He matches up favorably with Nasty Town, and really the question mark is the bull – will he be worth enough points to place?

KODY DID AN AWESOME JOB!!! TOO BAD HIS BULL STUNK IT UP!!! Should have been a re-ride since his bull obviously did not perform to the same level of the other bulls in the round (which is what in the PBR's re-ride rules constitutes a re-ride). He may not have won the round, but he rode a much tougher bull than the one that did. Too bad you can't win the round on pure grit, determinition, skill and effort and let's not forget "heart". This is why the bull pen should be even.

Kody - get a good pick in the draft tomorrow and get em rode.

    !!! GO KODY !!!

Well.... Kody did his job and the bull didn't. Just like I said, give the riders the same chance to win a round. With an inferior bull, he never had a chance.

I think the reason that Kody ended up with Red Kat, is because he's is leading the world. But heck he will own that bull, and win the round. So lets see who the best bull rider is. I already know who is, but lets just in case.

I loved Mike Lee with his "Yes I rode him!" and then the bull came back and said "Hey you rode me, now I run over you!". Haha, good job Mike about staying safe. Lets have a replay for 2maro. I'm kidding, but you made a good ride. =)

I think that JB got favored for the first go. I know that Kody will ride Red Kat, but it just seems that he got favored like he had been for some of the season. But I know Kody is going to kick butt and take names! Go Kody I hav faith in you!!

let r' buck: It's my understanding that there will not be a BFTS event in Portland in 2010; Reno and Nampa are too far away for me. Hope you're enjoying Round 1 as much as I am!

If you can to Coleman's event, why can't you go to Portland's? We live in Pendleton and travel to Reno, Nampa and Portland.

Good news: I won free tickets to the 2010 BFTS event of my choice by answering one of the TeamPBR Twitter trivia questions correctly the fastest! Woohoo!

Bad news: As I've mentioned before, there will be no BFTS events in my part of the country next year. (Actually, the correct verb is probably more like "complained" or "whined"...)

Good news: I asked instead for tickets to a nearby Challenger event (maybe Ross Coleman's, maybe something else in the Pacific Northwest).

Bad news: I DM'ed the TeamPBR folks two hours ago, immediately after being notified I'd won, asking whether the swap from a BFTS event to Challenger event would be possible and have not yet heard back from them one way or the other.

Good news: Maybe they're just too busy getting ready to Tweet the finals?

Bottom line: In any event, I'll still get to watch some great bull riding tonight!

One of the comments from the Blog about the draw last night was as follows:

"A few other highlights from the kick-off event was PBR livestock director Cody Lambert describing the first round bulls as "smooth spinners" and a good overall pen for the riders to "get their feet wet."

Now I am certainly not qualified to question those statements, but considering what we have now heard about disparities among some of the Round 1 bulls, just doesn't sound like they are all smooth spinners to me.

At any rate, this is the PBR World Finals, for goodness sakes...hopefully ALL the bulls are top quality performers.

Did anyone beside me notice that they called JB out first, Kody second, and Marchi third at the draw. Wonder why when he is rank #3?
I am praying hard for Marchi to win back to back. He is such a wonderful example of what
a "real" man should be. Humble, devoted to
his wife and children, and his fans.
GO MARCHI!! I can accept any bullrider who
wins except JB Mauney and that's because of
the way the PBR has pushed him all year.
Again, GO, MARCHI AND MAY GOD KEEP YOU SAFE!!

Whether you are a cowboy or cowgirl competing for a State Championship title, for a National High School title, a National College title, or the World PBR Championship title, every cowboy/girl knows the words "the luck of the draw" and they have always live with and accepted this rule of the game. Those of us that have loved and lived the game for our entire life understnd it well. This is why the draft was invented but I think the draw is the best 'old rodeo way'. Really with the amount of rides each rider gets in Vegas they will have their turn to 'shine' on the best.
There are somethings that will never change! Call it crude, call it wild, call it wrong, but it's the Bullriding Rodeo Way!!! I love it just like it is!!!!

    GoGoGoooooo JB!! Win the World!!!!!

I just want them all to do really well, so that truly the best man is left standing, when the dirt settles. C'mon JB, c'mon. I so want you to win. Please, please, pretty please. I know you can do it!

Joan Simpson, I'm with you on Brian. =D i think with his knee though, the problem was more that it had no strength rather than the pain - in the past 4 years, he's ridden with some serious pain and done pretty well. I know it's injured again, but as long as it had some strength, I think he'll get right back in his groove, and could he have a better bull to start off on?? =D Even if he doesn't do so well, I'm just glad he's riding, and I hope he doesn't end up hurting that knee any more before his nice long break next year.
  • Joan Simpson
    October 30, 2009
As far as Brian Canter, I would love for him to ride his bull, but he hasen't ridden in a while and sometimes it takes a while to get into the groove, especially with his injury.
Nobody wants him to ride more than I do because he is one of my best friends cousin and we always cheer him on.

    October 30, 2009
I am just thinking that Ross Coleman really got a great bull Cat Man Do, Zack on Pearl Snap, Mike Lee on SoulJa Boy and Robson on Black Gold. Just my guessing. California Deaming with Elliot Jacoby ridden 4 out of 4 times and in the 90's is a great pick.
There are so great bulls. At this round in the finals just ride the bull to heck with the score unless the bull rider gets a reride and always take the reride.
  • TWTX
    October 30, 2009
Some great bulls in this round, and a few not so good. Too bad for Kody that he got the
crappiest in the bunch, I did get to see Kody on this bull in Dallas this year. He got it
as his (3rd) re-ride bull. The bull had a bad out and Kody was bucked off at 7.0.
This was also when Kody was suffering from the flu. So, I am hopeful that not only will
Kody cover the bull this time, but the bull will have one of its better days and give Kody
the chance to make a good score. Considering the next round is a draft, this first round is extremely important.

GO KODY !!!!! I'm pulling for you to win it all!
  • old school
    October 30, 2009
Somebody will always get the lowest scoring bull in the draw and it won't be "fair," and even good bulls can have bad outs. If the bull doesn't buck he'll get a reride. I want Kody to win but I doubt he's worried about it; the job description is the same either way.

There are three total draws during the finals, so even if a rider gets off to a good start there's no guarantee he'll get to keep it going.

    October 30, 2009
Last year Marchi picked bulls he knew he could ride. I don't care for the draft and think it should not be used during the finals. This way the riders all have the same advantage - meaning the luck of the draw.

I would like to see Kody walk away with the whole thing. I would like to see Guillherme do what no other rider has done, but he has won it once. And JB you are still young and a good rider you will take home the buckle someday I am sure that.So all I can say is Kody your the man, you have lead all year don't give up now. As Justin Mckee always says You-Can-Go-All-The-Way.
  • webpbr
    October 30, 2009
BCfan1, I am not questioning the draw process, or "the luck of the draw". What I am questioning is the difference in the caliber of bulls. When you have bulls that can get you a 90+, when you ride them and ride them good, then you have bulls that, if you ride them and ride good and they "may" only get an 84-86, then there is something wrong with the disparity of bulls. Also, we are talking about the finals and the first round. The next two will be a draft, which will be based on what happens in the first round. There are some who say that the title could come down to one ride or even the difference between a 90 score or an 85. If that is the case, then put the riders on bulls that could be close to the same bull score and let the actual riders make the difference, not the bulls.
  • BCfan1
    October 30, 2009
webpbr, I understand what you're saying, but then again, isn't this how rodeo has always been? It's luck of the draw! In my opinion, these guys got spoiled with so many drafts in the finals last year. I'm glad they're cutting back, cause it shows what the guys are truly made of - if they can ride whatever is thrown at them whether or not they like the bull, it makes them a whole lot more deserving of a world title in my opinion.

Now I just want to express how excited I am that Brian is back!! =) And what a bull for him t get too... I saw this bull's one CBR out, and OMG, he was amazing. They don't score quite the same as PBR, they jack em up a bit more, and they gave that bull a 93. I would've been around 90/91 if I'd been scoring, but still, fantastic bull, and I'm so glad he got one that goes into his hand... hopefully that'll take some of the stress off his knee. Now, who's ready for some world finals??? =D

PBR Fan 68, Did I say there was a conspiracy theory? NO. What I did say is that the top riders are not given the same opportunity to score on their bulls. There are 168 bulls that are in the finals, that have had an out (8 bulls that have not had an out). Out of the 168 bulls, Red Kat has the lowest bull score of the 168. How does that give that rider equal opportunity to win the round, or even finish in the top? Why is it when people have a legitimate question, "some people" immediately accuse others of conspiracy?

Way to go Zack! J.B. is my favorite rider
and I know that you are a very good rider so
you are now my next favorite rider. Will be

guys. Show us all what you are all made of. Both of you ride your bulls with the great
talent that you two have. It's time for east

J.B Mauney--do your stuff and conquer the
finals. You deserve it! People say hateful
things about you but they do not know you,
brush their childish action/words to the
side. They are just trying to distract you!

Now, let me see if I got this right. The no. 3 and no. 4 guy get great bulls, rideable and high scores. The no. 2 guy gets a tough bull, but if he rides, should be high score. The no. 1 guy gets worst bull in the draw (if you look at all the bull scores, of bulls that have outs, Red Kat has the worst bull score of ANY of the bulls in the finals) and if he rides him, the score will probably not be high. Hmmmmmmm, sounds like all the riders are on even footing to start the finals ..... NOT.
