Still got it
Marchi puts a forgettable Finals behind him with a big weekend in Atlanta
DULUTH, Ga. (November 23, 2009) - In case you forgot, the 2008 PBR World Champion was Guilherme Marchi.
And after a forgettable World Finals in 2009, the always consistent Brazilian has taken the early lead in this year’s world standings by winning the first Built Ford Tough Series event of the 2010 season.
Marchi was the only man to ride all four bulls in Atlanta at the Challenger Tour Finals, which also served as a BFTS event.
Afterward he said, “In the Finals I didn’t do good, but I’m just glad to win this event here.”
Marchi, the most consistent rider of the past five seasons, was a title contender last year as he battled both Kody Lostroh and J.B. Mauney all season, until he surprisingly bucked off his first five bulls in Las Vegas before finally covering his last two.
The 2009 campaign is believed to have been the tightest race in PBR history, so it was only fitting that this weekend’s event would again come down to Marchi and Mauney. Lostroh, who won the 2009 world title by 594 points, did not compete in Atlanta after undergoing surgery on his riding elbow.
In the waning moments, it came down to Marchi, who selected Cool Spot with the first pick in the bull draft, while Mauney sat on the shark cage as the leader in the overall event average.
Marchi covered to win the event, collect $210,000 and take the early lead in the world standings, while Mauney, by virtue of his high score in the short go, won enough money ($78,750) to claim the Challenger Tour championship for the second time.
Mauney rode Crosswired for 92.25 points and three-bull total score of 266. But Marchi was the only rider to cover all four. The familiar names are now atop the world standings with 955.5 and 831 points respectively.
Rounding out the Top 5 leaders after the first event are Ross Coleman (735), Ned Cross (708.25) and Robson Palermo (635.5).
“During the Finals, everybody talked about me not riding good and not liking pressure,” said Marchi, “but I showed everyone today that I don’t need to prove [anything] for [anybody].”
In the past five years, Marchi has never finished lower than third in the world standings, the best five-year stretch of any bull rider in the history of the PBR.
Marchi is just 27 years old, and considering Mauney and Lostroh are both in their early 20s as well, they could be the Top 3 contenders for a number of years.
“Those guys are going to fight every week, you know,” Marchi said. “I love those guys and love to see those guys ride because those guys are tough and those guys deserve it.”
After the holiday break, the BFTS will resume in Baltimore on January 2 for a two-day event before moving on to another three-day event in New York City the following week.
Although Lostroh missed out on the first tour stop, the Colorado cowboy and reigning 2009 World Champion is expected to compete in January.
“Everybody’s happy and this is a good start for me,” said Marchi, who fell short in his attempt at winning two consecutive titles. “I finished in the Top 3 [when trying to] win back to back titles, which is not too bad.
“I’m going to be in this fight again.”
NEWS and NOTES
Guilherme Marchi made a candid comment about his dismal showing in Las Vegas, saying, “After the Finals I was scared. Oh my goodness, I [cam’t] ride bulls anymore and I need to learn it again, but this first event I was so glad to win.”
Marchi may have had a rough Finals. However, Matt Bohon has had a rough go of things for the past 18 months. The Missouri native talked about his struggles in a Podcast posted in the Event Center.Travis Sellers is one of the only bull riders to miss out on the short go and still go home with a check for $20,000. “I really needed it,” he said, of the money. “It’s a big confidence builder for me.” Sellers, who made it back to Round 3 in a random computer draw, said you can’t worry about the standings. “You’ll just fight your head,” he said, “and then it’s just going to go bad. Last year I did that and didn’t end as well as I needed to.”
Looking back at 2009, Jerome Robinson said, “One of the things that amazed me the most was the fan turnout for the shows in the face of all the economic times and everything. I thought it was a surprisingly good year.”
“The best storyline, that we don’t want to overlook, is that (Kody) Lostroh is not going to be out two months like we originally thought, and he’s not going to be too far behind either,” said Versus broadcaster Justin McKee. “Give him a couple of events and I think he’s going to be right back in it.”
For these and more interviews log onto www.pbr.tv and select the Podcast tab on the left-hand column of the page. There were 17 interviews conducted in Atlanta alone that can also be accessed through the Event Center page on www.pbr.com.

pbrfan??, 3 comments to establish no quality point? Yawning!!!! Make positive comments for your favorite and let others make positive comments for thier favorite without ugly ridicule.
I'm a JB fan too and riding crosswire was an amazing ride and the points were well deserved. I wish him a winning 2010 season. He is off to a great start. Go JB!!!
As Marchi states in this article "these guys are going to fight every week" and I can't wait
for Jan 2 for the next event. Every rider will be in this fight and they are all so capable..looking forward to watching great rides. -

Didn't JB get all the attention at the '09 Finals?, JB this,JB that, JB will, JB must,.. and we've heard a lot of that, Leah is interviewing JB while a ride is being missed by tv viewers,..or Mckee and McBride are saying how great a ride he had when his score should have lower, said by JDub,..com-mon stop feeling left out, now you know how we (other riders) fan felt,.. what goes around comes around,.......good day. -

Go JB! Please be sure to "show up" for every ride. If you do, there's no stopping you! I'm with McKee on this one - I see a World Champ buckle in your immediate future!! Watching you on Crosswired in Duluth was truly a sight to behold - it was so exciting.
crosswired is an easy bull, just one way and one speed bull,..will go either way but will not try to mix his bucking, yes he bucks good and w/ rythem, that makes anyone of the rider could get that score.. -

November 27, 2009To:FlashOBlue, below is your JB Question, and I think he has gotten most of the attention at the PBR Finals, more so over Kody, Guileherme, Valdiron and etc, think they have gotten tired of his me, me attitude...
November 24, 2009
Dear PBR,
As I understand it, JB Mauney is the Challenger Series Champion (like Kody Lostrow is the BFTS Champion). Am I correct on this? If so, why hasn't JB gotten any "press?"
Also, the PBR is promoting Guilherme as the "winner of the Challenger Series" when, in fact he is not. He's the Challenger "event" winner just like JB is the "event" winner of the BFTS. Yet, JB hasn't gotten any press over either title, except in hind site!
Even Guilherme stated in his PBR.TV interview that JB won the championship and he won the "event!" But the PBR articles and the fans continue to applaude Kody and Guilherme and not JB.
I am a fan of both Guilherme and JB, so I couldn't be happier with the resilts, BUT, JB DID win the Challenger Championship!
I have written to you previously asking you not to give JB a "leg up" by lauding over him, but now, you've blatently ignored his accomplishments! -

November 25, 2009Why don't you do away with the challenger events and just roll them into the Ford Built Tough Series. The same people are bucking. I thought Challenger was for the up and coming riders. No so. One had to look hard to find new comers. I know of 3 World champions who were in this event. This is Tiger Woods playing in the amateur league or the Yankees playing farm teams. This needs to be changed. Maybe the bottom 10 PBR riders being able to ride in the challenger. Something needs to be done about this. -

November 24, 2009I don't know if there's a reason this hasn't yet been posted, and I apologize in advance if I'm overstepping myself. I'll completely understand if this gets deleted, but here goes...
Keith Ryan Cartwright posted on Facebook earlier today that his father has p!@#ed away. This is awful news for him and his family, and I for one will be praying for them, as well as for Dustin Elliott's family, during this painful time. FlashOBlue, this might be why he's not yet posted anything about JB...so you might just want to be patient for the time being. -

November 24, 2009All I can say is that maybe, just maybe, all the JB fans will finally understand why some of
us were so upset ab out all the attention he received last year when Guilherme was the
World Champ and Kody was the #1. JB was all they focused on, making some of us very upset.
I hope, now, that they will understand why we felt like we did. I spent a lot of time
complaining to the PBR about the accolades lauded on JB and ignoring the other riders. I must say I admit I was very impressed with JB for the way he congratulated Marchi after Marchi won. I
don't remember ever seeing JB really do that before. I'm not a JB fan, but I did see a side
to him I've never noticed before. He even picked up Marchi's hat. That was nice!! And, I
hope I personally don't get attacked for simply voicing my opinion. I have grown so weary of
being misjuged and called names just because I'm not JB's fan. I will probably never be a JB
fan, but I can respect him and appreciate his graciousness!!

November 24, 2009FlashOBlue: For what it's worth, I just looked up the articles published after the last Challenger Finals (in February 2008), and all of them focused on Clayton Williams, who won the Challenger Finals *Event* title. I only did a quick scan but was unable to find a mention of who was the "winner of the Challenger Series" that year. So it seems there's precedence for focusing on the winner of the event, not the "series champion." Below are links to the articles of interest so you can see for yourself. Feel free to follow up, anyone, if you find info on who was the "Challenger series champion" that year. I'm off to work...

November 23, 2009As far as Kody being behind in points. Yes, the others did get a head start on him
because of his surgery. However, the total points of 995 can almost be made up in
one 2-day event. A two day event has the possibility of 900 points and a 3 day
event has a total of I believe 1,100 points. Of course remember that Kody competed
in one less event this year than JB or Marchi because of his injury and did not get
to complete the Omaha event because of his injury in the first round, but still won the
Title, while riding with an injured riding arm. So even though others got a head-start
on Kody, as JB said, Kody can outrun him. Of course JB meant in a foot race, but I think
Kody can "outrun" him in the race for the Title also! As far as when Kody will be able to
compete at 100% I don't think any of us know, but I am sure Kody will be working hard at
rehabilitating his arm and will come back strong! I would love for Kody to win
back-to-back! I am praying that all the riders are able to heal up during this break
and come back strong in January. Can't wait! -

November 23, 2009hillsaa: Actually, I'm glad the PBR doesn't have a "hot-line for us overly obsessed PBR fans." I've no doubt they're busy folks who are just trying to do their job, and I don't think they need nonstop pestering from us fans -- and they certainly don't need to be subjected on a whim to the abusive language used by some fans around here. I know I'm curious about enough persnickety details that I could probably keep the entire PBR staff occupied for at least a month solid, but that would be silly and unproductive for both me and them. -

November 23, 2009Sorry, as soon as I pressed save, I realized JB did not win the PBR final event wins, he was second in the overall standings which means in comparison to the Challenger event he would win the small amount. -
BullRidingIsArt
November 23, 2009flashoblue: I totally agree with you. What kind of pay off is this for the Challenger competition. The big pay off is for the final event win and the series championship get a small amout in comparison. This seems really wrong. I personallty do not think PBR should follow this format but if they did JB would have been the big winner the last 3 years. The Challenger format seems really messed up. -

November 23, 2009Calm down FlashOBlue, I'm sure there will be an article or articles about JB coming soon. I know Keith said last week to look for a profile on JB. He may have just waited until after the Challenger. -
BullRidingIsArt
November 23, 2009The amount of points Marchi and JB collected (like 2 regular events) in this win will definitely set Kody behind. Realistically, if it is like ALL the other riders recovering after surgery it will take alot more time than his fans are allowing. SORRY but this could be very true. I'm not wishing Kody anything but a good recovery but if anyone benefits from this I hope it's JB. Really looking forward to the rest of the exciting 2010 season. -

November 23, 2009I'll say it again! JB WON the Challenger Series Championship (Not sure of the amount but about $75,000.) not Guilherme!
Guilherme won the Challenger Finals "EVENT." ($200,000.)
Why doesn't anyone agree with me? Except Guilherme who stated that fact in his PBR.TV interview!
Kody won the BFTS Championship ($1,000,000.) and JB won the BFTS Finals "Event" for what? $200,000. I can't remember.
My question? Why isn't anything being said about JB and his WIN? You all say the PBR is shoving JB down our throats, well why are they ignoring his win?
Please don't get me wrong--I am a fan of both Guilherme and JB and am happy that both won a title, but I would think that the Championship title is greater than the Event title--just like it is in the BFTS. Right? -

November 23, 2009Im so happy Guilherme won the Challenger Finals. I have to be honest I was rooting for anyone but JB! SORRY! I was really hoping Dustin Elliot would win. It would have been really great to see him win and event in such a tragic situation. I have to say I was a little disappointed to see the cameras follow Dustin the way they did, know how emotional of a time it was for him. Sometimes they take it a little to far...and that was the case with Dustin. I want to send my condolences to Dustin and his family in this difficult time.
I cant wait until January when Kody comes back. I only wish he had the chance to start out fair with eveyone else. I think Kody, JB and Guilhereme are going to be battling it out again this year and for years to come..hoping everyone can stay healthy this year! I would personally love to see Kody go back to back, with Dustin and Josh K. in 2nd and 3rd...just a thought. If Kody doesnt win...IM ROOTING FOR DUSTIN!
I'd also like to have and update on Ryan Dirteater if anyone has any news!!! -

November 23, 2009While your unraveling all this about the Challenger Finals, if you come across anything about
the major changes in the payouts for this event over the last 3 years, I would be interested
in hearing it. In 2007, the winner of the event, Clayton Williams, got a check for $250,000.
In 2008, the winner of the event, Clayton Williams again, got a check for $500,000. Now this
year the winner rec'd $200,000. Oh yeah, by the way, they billed the 2007 one as having a total
of 1,000,000 in payouts, don't remember what they billed the 2008 one as having, but I don't think
the round winners had the kind of payouts back then that they had at this one.
In addition, I don't remember the specific's but if you weren't in the top 45???? (at least I
think it was 45) you had to qualify for it by going to a 2 or 3 day event at the Lazy E arena in
Guthrie, OK a couple of days before the Finals in OK City. (my memory sure isn't what it used
to be).
Good luck trying to get straight answers out of anyone. -

November 23, 2009hillsaa - No one from the PBR has explained why the change of the Challenger was made. An article on 10/27/09 was released, explaining the change of the Challenger and it was now going to be a BFTS event. This was less than a month before the event itself and there has been no explanation to this date from anyone, including Keith. I am not blaming Keith, but someone from the PBR should be able to explain the change. After calling the PBR office last week, I could not find anyone that had an explanation. I also called today to find out why the payout was advertised as $500k and the actual payout was $450k. No one could explain (talked to several people and several departments) and they said they would look into it and see. I also tried to find out if the telecast is controlled by VERSUS solely or the PBR has some control in editing (cameraman incident), again no one had any answers. So.... just frustrating trying to get answers. -

November 23, 2009Wow, just reading the comments on this article really gave me a headache. First, there is nothing with speaking your mind but at some point free speech can quickly turn into a racist bash when talking of someones nationality. As a professional historian I would like to explain that America was founded on the coming together of a wide variety of nationalities, hence the "melting Pot" phrase. And the PBR as well was founded on the bringing together of a wide variety of riders some representing different countries, such as Canada, Australia, Mexico and oh my Brazil (Ha).
Moving on, I think that it was really up lifting to see Marchi win the Challenger Finals, just seeing his smiling face and knowing that the dreaded slump from 2 weeks ago was officially over. Congrats to Marchi and good luck to him throughout the rest of the year.
Second, to whom ever stated that the BFTS riders were taking the Challenger riders money: if you look at the standings for the Challenger tour you will note that all of the BFTS riders that rode are all on the qualifier standings (These values determine what riders will be qualified for the 2009 Finals. Money represented is accumulated from all qualified events AFTER the 2008 Finals). So in fact it was a Challenger Finals. Also if you have any questions about why they decided to make it the first stop on the BFTS tour I'm pretty sure that Keith states why in earlier articles.
Moving on: JB did great and I think he is ready to try again this season. I hope that Kody is feeling good and that he also comes back ready to do what he did last year. This is going to be an awesome season and I'm really looking forward to the ups and downs. Oh and Ross Coleman's new celebration is hilarious. I guess everyone needs a signature move! -

Twiggy
November 23, 2009Some of the American riders use Brazilian ropes as well. Shoot, I know Ednei has used an
American rope before. In talking with some of the riders, the rope only plays a small part
in the overall ride. I've heard G-Man & several others say that if your doing everything
correct, you should be able to ride with a piece of twine for your rope. If your gonna
standardize the ropes, then the next thing to do is standardize the spurs just like the bull
riding's in Brazil do. Can't say I'm for or against standardization, but if you want to put
everyone on the exact same playing field as BH is talking about that would be one way to do it.
It's sounding more & more like NASCAR, (which is another sport I really enjoy) back when they
were first putting the Car of tommorrow into play. They thought that putting everyone with the
exact same car would make it more competitive, but look what happened, the cream rose to the top
again and Jimmie Johnson has now made history.
My point.......if you make them all use the same type of rope, same type of spur, etc....the best
rider/riders are still gonna win. Their god given talents are going to shine thru all the hoop
la. -

November 23, 2009i dont care what any of you think about my comments towards brazillians. i think the pbr should at least make the brazillians use american ropes cause w/brazillian ropes all they gotta do is sit there and hang on cause there ropes are made to keep them in the middle of the bull. -

November 23, 2009Nothing is wrong with anyone expressing their opinions. However, expecting no backlash for opinions that incite would be ridiculous, which I am sure someone who chooses a handle such as the one being discussed must know.
It would be nice if we could keep this congratulatory story on a good track. So on that note, I am happy to see Marchi riding so well and look forward to seeing how 2010 plays out for him and all the riders. -

November 23, 2009brazillian hater - I don't want Keith to delete your comments, because I believe in free speech, no matter how stupid you are. That is right, I called you stupid. You either want to cause controversy or get on here with your "shock jock" comments. How about next time having the guts and put your handle you would normally use on here, instead of putting some fake handle, and please don't say this is your first time to make a comment. Since you seem to be a JB fan (from your post on another article), I hope other JB fans will comment on your comment and how disgusting your sign on name alone is and this is not representative of JB fans (which I don't think it is representative of any rider's fans). -

November 23, 2009Flash, you know there seems to always be one in every crowd. We can only hope that if he is
ignored, he will go away.
Congrats to Guilherme & JB. -

November 23, 2009Just listened to Guilherme's interview and he said, "I'm happy to win the event and happy that JB won the Challenger finals." Here's somebody who "gets it!"
So, when will JB be featured as the Challenger Tour Champion?" -

November 23, 2009"An elated Guilherme Marchi talks to pbr.tv after Challenger Finals victory." Shouldn't this headline for PBR.TV say "Challenger EVENT Finals victory? I adore Guilherme, but JB DID win the Challenger Finals. -

November 23, 2009Hey moderators or Keith--can you bump "brazillian hater" from the board? He/she is a TROLL and the comments too negative. -

November 23, 2009i think the brazillians need to go back to brazil and bee good down there instead of here 'cause they are to good... and for those who think they get under scored, its cause they lock down and make the bulls look easy, especially valderon.

November 23, 2009I was so excited watching the 3rd round and then when it came to the short round, I was jumping out of my chair. Such great bulls and great competition between the last fifteen bull riders. I was thrilled for Guilherme and JB but it was sweet seeing Guilherme ride all of his bulls. What a great start to the season for such a great person and a continually great super star in bull riding.
I am really looking forward for the 2010 year and wish the best to all of the bull riders and their families. -

November 23, 2009I just want to congratulate Guilherme. I keep hearing the announcers and keep reading articles about how "we" have forgotten Guilherme and I wonder what they are talking about! Guilherme is a World Champ and a cl!@# act. My mother and I just love how he is always helping the other riders in the chute AND how he always cheers and congratulates a rider even when he is knocked out of the Champs chair. I am his fan when he rides and when he doesn't! He did not ride well at the Finals, but his time in the light is far from over. We have not forgotten you Guilherme. May Gods blessings to you and your family continue and my you continue to ride without injury, win and contend for many ears to come. -

November 23, 2009I agree w/ all those who say the BFTS should NOT have been included in the Challenger Finals.
Its a big rip off for the guys in the Challenger Series that have worked hard all year to get to where they are. If a bullrider competed in the World Finals, he definitely should NOT have been able to compete in the Challenger Finals. I sure hope whoever made this decision reverses it next year. -

November 23, 2009Yeah Keith, and most of the money was taken home by BFTS competitors instead of the Challenger guys who have worked so hard. Just like redskid43 said, had their lunch money taken away by the school yard bully. No one is bad mouthing the BFTS guys whatsoever, it's the SCBR that is the bully here. -

November 23, 2009My bad, the third note should have referenced TRAVIS SELLERS instead of Jordan Hupp. My mistake. Sorry about that.
And, for the record, because the event was structured the way it was seven Challenger qualifiers not ranked in the Top 40 in the world standings were able to compete this weekend, who wouldn't have otherwise been at the event had it only featured the Top 40 Challenger qualifiers. -
redskid43
November 23, 2009can you say rip off,all the year long challenger tour guys can, kind of like the school yard bully comming in and stealing their lunch money at the last minute. the built ford tough series should stay out of the challenger tour -

November 23, 2009Way to go, Marchi!! You didn't have to prove anything to anybody but maybe yourself. All
your fans never lost faith in you. You are still the CHAMP, and I look forward to you
reclaiming your title in 2010. You are such a wonderful example and inspiration for our
young people. I can't think of one bullrider I'd rather my grandsons immulate than you.
No matter what happens, you always show the world what a true sportsman and wonderful man you
are. I pray this win is just the first of many more for you, my hero!!! -

a true Challenger Finals. Like happytrail

November 23, 2009Even after my last post (below) I'm extremely happy that Guilherme won this event! And I'm happy that JB won the series! My 2 favorites--side-by-side! I'm loving this season already!
Congratulations to two GREAT champions! -

November 23, 2009FlashOBue, the SCBR also made it the first 2010 BFTS event, paving the way for all to participate in the event and eligible for winnings. Why would the SCBR do that and take away from all those that participated at this level? Follow the money... -

November 23, 2009I am sooooo confused! I adore Guilherme and JB, but what happened last night?
Was it the Challenger Series "World" Final? So why didn't JB earn more money?
Guilherme only won the "event" and he gets the $200,000.? I don't get it.
This is JB's second Challenger SEries Finals win. When did he win it before? And who won last year?
I don't see where Guilherme entered a Challenger event all season. Don't BFTS riders have to appear in at least one Challenger event to "qualify" for the finals?
I've tried to look this up, but can't figure it out! Help! -
sannpow
November 23, 2009"Still Got It" yes, actually he's never lost it!
Congratulations Guilherme, I am so happy for you. No, you don't NEED to prove "anything" for "anybody", but you DID prove why you are a "Champion" and showed everyone why you will win another World Champion title in the future. You never give up, you give it your absolute best each time the chute opens and that's what it takes. Enjoy your victory, you are blessed and very deserving of it!
I can't wait to see what all God has for you in 2010! Enjoy the holidays with your family, and get ready for another awesome year coming up! You will definately be "in the fight again".
God Bless You!

November 23, 2009Keith - In your above News and Notes you mentioned Jordan Hupp. Shouldn't that be Travis Sellers/ Jordan Hupp rode 3 bulls, made it to the short go, and did not make any money.
In other articles the payout for the Challenger said $500k, but if you add up all the payouts, it adds up to $450k. Am I missing something?
Also, who controls the broadcast of the events, VERSUS or the PBR? In particular the cameramen and the editing? Do the announcers work for VERSUS or the PBR? -
happytrail1
November 23, 2009Nothing against Marchi or any of the other BFTS competitors, but this WAS supposed to be a
Challenger Finals. Squire Capital Bull Riding's (SCBR) inclusion of the BFTS first 2010 event
took away from all the competitors at that Challenger level, the winnings, the public recognition,
the pride. Was this just another way for SCBR to make money, profits, sell seats and air time advertising? It certainly wasn't about the riders at the Challenger level who all year looked forward to 'their' Finals event. And the way it was broadcast it was obvious the commentators
and Versus treated it just like another BFTS event. And Versus even again demonstrated how
tasteless and unprofessional they can be when pursuing Dustin the way they did instead of giving
him the courtesy of privacy while grieving the loss of his father.
Again, no bad blood for the BFTS competitors in this event. They didn't make the decision on
this being a BFTS event. SCBR made that greed-motivated decision.
