Title race could come down to one ride, or even one point
LAS VEGAS (October 23, 2009) - Eight days from now, the Top 40 professional bull riders in the world will converge upon Las Vegas.
Legends will be made. Dreams will come true, or become nightmares, 8 seconds at a time.
And while any of the 40 cowboys there can ride off with the 2009 PBR World Finals event title, the Top 3 riders in the world standings – Kody Lostroh, Guilherme Marchi and J.B. Mauney – remain the odds-on favorites to win this year’s World Championship.
Any one of the three, if successful, will mark a historic moment if he wins.
No former Daisy Rookie of the Year winner has ever gone on to win a world title. Lostroh was the top rookie in 2005, while Mauney won the honor a year later in 2006. Mauney would also be the first rider from east of the Mississippi River to a win a PBR Championship.
Of course, Marchi is vying for an elusive back-to-back World Championship … the first in the 16-year history of the PBR.
The 2009 Built Ford Tough Series has been the tightest race the PBR has seen. In the words of country singer Deryl Dodd, it just might come down to “One Ride in Vegas.”
He'll ride ‘em all from Portland to Texas / And dreamin’ of one ride in Vegas / One ride in Vegas.
The race is too close to call. It’s all in the numbers.
Lostroh has won five events, more than the other two, who have combined for six. Lostroh has also won more go-rounds, 12, than Mauney, 9, and Marchi, 6, but Mauney has won more short go rounds, 4, than Lostroh, 3, and Marchi, 3.
However, Marchi has a slight edge in riding percentage.
Marchi’s season average is 62.9 percent, while Lostroh is at 62.1 and Mauney is at 60.4. But in Vegas it’ll come down to who rides more bulls, and to this point, Marchi holds the advantage with 56 qualified scores, compared to 55 by Mauney and 54 for Lostroh.
Ultimately, it’s about who’s on top of the world standings, and currently Lostroh has been there for the past 20 events – 24 throughout the season. Mauney, who held the top spot for a seven-week stretch following Dallas, is the only other rider to have been ranked No. 1 this year.
During a recent Versus broadcast, Ty Murray and Justin McKee talked about how close a race it’s shaping up to be.
The two surmised that it could not only come down to one ride, it could very well come down to less than that.
“This race could come down to one point,” Murray said.
Lonely nights, run down motel rooms / Achin’ bones from yesterday's ride / It's takin’ more than he thought he could give it / But he's holdin’ on for one ride in Vegas / One ride in Vegas.
In a Podcast recorded last weekend, Murray recalled one of his title seasons as a means of illustrating just how important each and every decision can be in whether or not you win a world title.
Murray recalled getting on a bull in the second round of the NFR. Earlier that year he been over 90 points, but this time the bull “blows out of the chute, falls down and gets right back up” and Murray ends up with a 78 and an option of a re-ride.
Had he kept the score, he would have won fourth for the round, but Murray took the option and finished the round second.
By the time it was all said and done, Daryl Mills made a run at him, and Murray won the title by only $95. Had kept the initial score in Round 2, he would have been the reserve champion.
“Every single ride, every single move you make counts,” Murray said, “and at this point in the season, it’s real easy to see how important all those decisions are.
“But those decisions are important at the very first event of the year if you are seriously going for a World Championship. You gotta stay focused and you gotta believe in yourself, have that confidence and always try to better your position.”
He's riskin’ it all, driven by a hunger / That never will let him give up / And with a fire in his eyes he dances with thunder / ‘Til one day his day finally comes.
Mauney, who said he’d like to have a couple outs back, has said in recent weeks that he’ll continue picking rank bulls when given the opportunity, but that he needs to bear in mind which of those bulls better fits his style.
Unlike last year’s Finals – which featured seven drafts to one draw – this year’s format calls for three draws and four drafts.
But at this point, there’s no going back. It’s time for all three – and anyone who intends to challenge them – to step up, ride all eight bulls and win a round or two.
“We’re talking about such a tight race that every bull counts,” said Murray.
However it all shakes out, 2009 will be the most eagerly awaited Finals in 16 years.
His hearts beats fast with anticipation / Brighter lights then he's ever seen before / He's waited his whole life for the next 8 seconds / And he'd do it all again for one ride in Vegas / Just one ride in Vegas. NEWS and NOTES

GO J.B. MAUNEY!!!!!!! Look how far you have came and look at what you have accomplished this year, Calgary Stampede, MVP at the World Cup and those great rides with the PBR events. This is your year. Stay focused and take the title, we know that you can do it. IT'S J.B. ALL THE WAY.......................WIN THE TITLE KID, YOU KNOW YOU CAN DO IT! Your Oklahoma BIGGIST fan. Met you in Oklahoma City this year, you are a very well mannered young man. I'm so proud of you, I wish I were setting at the finals beside your mom right now! Play safe and ride hard, you know it's just waiting there for you to grab so loosen up and make your rides and get those 90+ rides rolling. Christina Little

We were disappointed in the judging decisions in the first round of the finals. We think every rider should have a fair shot at a chance to win the round. Any bulls that do not perform so the rider can win should be a reason for a reride option and there were three in the first round in that category. Because of the bull draft being used in the next two rounds the judging needs to be fair. J.B. has already won two events this year where the decision was questionable and last night the decision that his ride was better than Josh Koschel's was also questionable. pa

I am going to miss going this year so much but I hope that Kody just keeps his cool and take one ride at a time. I think he is a good man for kids to watch and have as their hero. I am hoping that JB does well but I really would like to see Kody take it this year. I wish that they wouldn't allow the camera to film the cowboys as they go down the hall and into the locker room...after a frustrating ride. If they need to vent...let them do it in private. I pray that all goes well and there are no bad accidents.Good luck.

sparkysfiregirl08,
I credited Deryl Dodd because he wrote the song and recorded it in 1996, and then two years later Chris LeDoux covered it in 1998. Deryl also released an official PBR album in 2001, "Dancin' with Thunder," which featured his version of the song. There was no disrespect to Chris. But as a former music critic I'm only tipping my hat to Deryl Dodd.

Is it FRIDAY yet ? Can't come fast enough for me. It is going to be so exciting to see how this will all plays out. Peggy's Picks: For the win: Kody Lostroh, my wildcard: Zack Brown.
For my favorites: the BULL FIGHTING Crew: stay safe out there guys !!
2009 was quite the year of ups and downs. Looking forward to another great season in 2010. Please consider coming to Wisconsin !
Good Luck to all riders !!

Ok.. Totally off the topic if the Finals.. I understand the promotions of new and risiing country artists.. But.. Why would you give credit to a new guy, on possibly one of the greatest songs ever written..when a World Champion Cowboy wrote and sang the song "One Ride in Vegas".. My husband is one of the all around cowboys that loves PBR, but brought it to my attention.. This was a good article, so no disrespect to the writers.. Are we the only two that think this way?...
GOOD LUCK JB!!!

So excited for the Finals to finally get here! It is soooo close between the top 3, but I still think Kody is going to win it!!!

Just saw the CBS program about the road to Vegas. It was a great show. (Wished they had mentioned Rasmussen's wreck when they talked about the other bad wrecks.) Anyone following the PBR knows Flint. The show was well done and didn't make the riders look like a bunch of idiots like the M NBC seems to. Justin, Ty, Craig and Leah were the commentators and I believe make the show sonderful as the history so far of this season. It never came at 5:00 ES like the paper said, so I turned the TV on at 1:00 so they couldn't sneak it apast me. Got it recorded for the long off season so my group won't go crazy. We root for different riders. I say Go Marchi. But any of them will be a god representative of the PBR. Even Mauney seemed to be back off his seeming Hero status after the BRazilian win. Seemed to be too big for his britches after that until recently. Wish me not to have a heart attack during this finals. It going to be good!! to say the least. Hang in there everyone, this is going to be a wild ride.
BullRidingIsArt October 25, 2009
I hope we see some amazing rides from all the riders and hope all stay safe.
JB: stay focused, loose, and stay tough. Have fun and it's one bull at a time. JB is such on exciting bullrider to watch. Can't wait for Vegas!
GO JB!!!!! WIN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!
pbland October 25, 2009

GOOOOOO JB AND KODY!!!!!
wojo62 October 23, 2009
I would love to see Guilherme win the 1st back2back championships, that would be awesome. Either way its going to be an exciting finals to watch.
alamo October 23, 2009
Zack Brown is the odds-on favorite of everyone in my office.
louisiana fan October 23, 2009
I just hope J.B. stays cool and calm, I think I might be a nervous wreck and I'm just watching! There has got to be soooo much pressure especially on the top contenders who want to do well. Anything can happen, there are so many various factors that can enter into a ride, some of it the rider has no control over. (the bull)
walkamungus October 23, 2009
Regardless of who comes out on top, the Finals should be fantastic. It would be great if Guilherme won, because winning back2back titles would be such an accomplishment; it would be great if Kody won, because he's ridden so well all year; and it would great if JB won, because he's flat-out fun to watch. And it *really* would be great if Zack Brown squeaked by to take the title!
I have no idea who to pick for the event win. A lot of guys rode well at Mohegan last week -- it was a confidence-building bull pen.
Thanks, KRC, now I've gotta switch over to the Chris LeDoux playlist on my iPod. (Not that that's a hardship.)
cactus-sue October 23, 2009
Good luck to all the cowboys but I am pulling for Kody! I hope the arm is ok and that he is ready to go and prove he is the best!!!!!

tpnm04 October 23, 2009
I have mixed emotions ... I really would like to see Kody win! but it would be nice for Guilherme to take it two years in a row. Ok not a big JB fan - but a JB fan... and I hope Zack does well!!! can't wait to get to Vegas! good luck to all the cowboys!
kingswin October 23, 2009
Go JB and KODY!!!!!
ford girl October 23, 2009
I have no clue as to who will win but i'm gonna be pulling for both JB and Kody. It would also be really awesome if one of the other could jump up and win it. I would love to see Ryan McConnel wi it but i would really love to see little Brian Canter win as well as JB. Kick Butt and Take Names in Vegas guy!!!!! Jean
PBR#1 October 23, 2009
Cant wait going to be good watching.
GO Guilherme!!!
TWTX October 23, 2009
Being that I am a Kody Lostroh fan, I am pulling for Kody to win the title. I think it will be extremely close and any of the top 3 could win in the end. The bulls have been great this year and I like the list of the top 11. I have always liked Troubadour, but he will need to have better outs than his last two to have a chance at Bull of the Year. I am thinking it will be between Big Tex and Code Blue. Can't wait for the Finals to begin and looking forward to being there the last weekend. Praying for safe rides for all the cowboys and as usual...
G O K O D Y ! ! !
countrygirl1995 October 23, 2009
this is going to be so exciting. I cant wait. I'm pulling for JB tho.
GO JB!!
