One for the aged

White returns to form, wins Round 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (October 11, 2009) - In more ways than one, he looked like the Mike White of old.

He closed out the first flight of Round 1 with an 88.75-point effort on Carolina Cat, which held up over 32 more outs for the early lead in Columbus, Ohio, at the Cooper Tires Invitational.

White has won this event twice (2004, 2007) in his career.

“It felt good,” White said. “Last weekend I rode my second-round bull and really felt good, felt in control and felt back to normal.”

White returned to competition in Ontario, Calif., after sitting out since April with a torn tendon in his rotator cuff.

The 33-year-old cowboy from De Kalb, Texas, initially returned with a helmet, but midway through last weekend’s event in Portland, Ore., he decided go back to riding with a hat instead.

He was again without the helmet Saturday night when he rode at Nationwide Arena.

“I can honestly say I gave the helmet an honest effort,” he said, “I got on six bulls with it and it just it wasn’t working for me. I don’t know if it was a mental deal or what, but I just didn’t feel comfortable and didn’t feel like I had any control. I don’t know if it was throwing my balance off or what, but it didn’t work and, in this game, you gotta do what works for you because it pays the bills.”

Right now White is 31st in the world standings, but he needs money more than points.

He’s 50th in the qualifier standings with $34,743.82 earned, and it’s going to take more than $50,000 earned to qualify for the 2009 PBR World Finals, which start Oct. 30 in Las Vegas and take place through Nov. 8.

“I haven’t looked at it,” said White, “but I’m just going off of years past, and it usually takes $50 to $55,000, so I’m looking at having to win $20,000.”

Saturday night was the first time White won an opening round of an event since doing so in New York City, an event that was won by J.B. Mauney. It’s only his third round win of the season—the other coming in Round 2 of Anaheim.

“I felt confident,” he added, “the bull I got on tonight was a good bull to get on.”

He’s not looking forward to his second-round bull, Silver Wings.

“It ain’t such a good bull,” White said. “He’s been out a bunch of times and only been rode once. He’s a hard bull to get by, but I’ve rode bulls in the past that are hard to ride. As a matter of fact, one of the bulls I rode here in Columbus to win was a bull that’s never been ridden, that was High Tide, and I ain’t saying I can’t do it. Anything is possible.”

White was the top scorer among 21 qualified rides, which were the most qualified rides in an opening round since they cowboys recorded 22 in Tacoma. The 21 rides are nearly four over the season average of 17.24 for the opening round.

Rounding out the Top 5 are Ross Coleman (87.75), Chris Shivers (87.25), Elliott Jacoby (87) and Dustin Elliott (86.75).

White will be contending for the event title along with the Top 3 contenders for this year’s world title.

J.B. Mauney, Guilherme Marchi and Kody Lostroh continued their season-long battle with three consecutive rides to close out the round.

“I think it’s great,” Lostroh said. “I think this is what it’s about—the best guys battling it out, and it’s an exciting deal to be a part of.”

Mauney finished ninth with an 86 on Semi-Automatic, while Marchi and Lostroh were 83.75 and 84 points respectively.

Lostroh, who entered the weekend 962 points ahead of Marchi and 972.5 ahead of Mauney in the standings, is normally calm, cool and collected, but the reserved cowboy from Colorado showed some emotion afterward. Lostroh was 16th and Marchi 17th in the opening round.

Lostroh was clearly fired up after he got off Buckle – a ride in which he worked hard every second of the trip.

“He really made me work,” Lostroh said, “and sometimes that gets me pretty fired up. … I try not to let my emotions get the best of me, but I was fired up there and it’s fun to let it out.”

webpbr - thanks for your response...this on line stuff is so cool...i understand what you're saying and can agree with that if negotiations are still on-going. by their dealings with dish, i believed that they were done negotiating and that the bridge was in cinders. the only thing that i believe could be pbr's thinking is that if they publicize this, directv will eventually fold. my other question is regarding their contract with verses which i believe is up in a year. does that mean when the channel contract goes into negotiations, they would/could switch channels and again put the audiance into the same situation, except possibly switching packages in order to keep up with pbr. how many times does a fan do that before they tire? thanks again for your response.

doreen- I do not know anything about any continued talks between DirecTV and VERSUS. I think that this will eventually be solved, because of the NHL. The longer the hockey season goes, and it gets closer to playoffs, the better the chance of a deal getting done. Nobody from the PBR has answered the question: Does the fact that DISH is the "exclusive satellite provider", does that mean that they are going to be the only one to carry PBR on VERSUS for the next 18 months, even if DirecTV works it out with VERSUS, or does it simply mean that Dish gets "exclusive" advertising with the PBR. Once that questioned is answered, there still is hope that if DirecTV and VERSUS work this out, you can get PBR. The problem is, the PBR has not clarified what "exclusive" means. Why, I don't know. I have cable, so I am not affected by this change. However, it is bad business for the PBR to take sides in this dispute, for short term gain, and long term loss.

i don't know what webpbr is talking about regarding a sign reading directv took my versus since we weren't able to see it. Webpbr states "the PBR has taken sides, but if they keep this up they are going to be burning bridges with Directv". The bridge was already demolished and as far as anyone knows and all talks ended when they made the deal with Dish. Unless webpbr knows more than advertised it is our understanding that all negotiations have ended and now Dish is the one and only with PBR until the next contract. I would have loved to see Mike W ride. He's been one of my favorites for years. But we can't. Now do we switch to Dish, like we switched to Directv, when last contract negotiations took Verses temporarily away from Dish. Do we take our chances that when PBR has their contract next year with Verses, that they will actually stick, or will they switch channels and again leave us out in the cold. We feel abandoned. Silly to feel that way I know but we do. We felt a personal connection with PBR and now it seems like no one cares.

I was so glad to see Mike ride. What two great rides of 88.75 on Carolina Cat and then in the short go 91.50 on Appolo. Man that was great!

I was in Columbus and as it was back in 2007, the energy watching Mighty Mike win Saturday night and then scoring that 91.50 in the short go was just absolutely amazing. Once again he has proven that he can prevail and though I understand the helmet, the hat is a much better fit. Hopefully, he will be able to pull out a few more tricks before Vegas and even decide he has one more year left in him. Go Mighty Mike.

Congrats to all 21 riders that covered their bulls in the first round.

I wasn't happy with VERSUS showing that person with the sign "DirecTV Took My VERSUS". They made a point to show it 3 times, and no other sign was shown about riders or anything else. Obviously the PBR has taken sides, but if they keep this up they are going to be burning bridges with DirecTV. Not good business, IMO.

Sure glad to see on the web site that Mike White, one of my favorite riders is back and doing it's nice to hear that 2 of my other favorites, Chris Shivers and Ross Coleman did well also.
Would have been really good if we were able to watch it.

Thank you to whom ever got the Twitter back like it used to be. I am so thankful to get the sunday results in "real time" and all the results were current - not like last night. Thanks for all of the DTV people.

Great to see Mike White do well again after all he's been through. He has as much riding ability as anybody out there, and I honestly think he would've won a PBR championship some time ago if he hadn't had so many injuries - and really bad ones - during his career.

It was great to see Mike, Ross and Chris in the top 3! But titling this story "one for the aged" was a really poor choice of words.

I was glad for Mike, he needed that, I was happy for Chris, infact he has a good chance of
winning this event, he should be able to cover his round 2 draw and get in on the championship
round. We'll see. J.B. did really good, hope he continues to do so. Another win would be
great! Have to say the PBR event for my guys turned out better than my college guys, LSU, but
you can't keep tigers down, they'll be back, just like good riders. Good luck to Mike, Chris
    course, J.B.

We had some awesome bull riding last night! 21 qualified rides! So happy to see Mike
White come back after such a long time off with his injury to win the round. Sure wish
the helmet would have worked for him though. Exciting to see that the top three are not
giving an inch. Too bad some of the bulls did not do their job to help them score higher.
Glad to see Dustin and Josh get the 8 also. Looking forward to seeing tonight, just wish
it was televised live also. Pray that all remain safe and cheering for Kody to keep
that fire going tonight for two more qualified rides!!!
    GO KODY!!!!
