Portland notes

Facts, stats and curiosities

PORTLAND, Ore. (October 2, 2009) -

•    The Top 3 riders in the world – Kody Lostroh, Guilherme Marchi and J.B. Mauney – have each won one of the past three Built Ford Tough Series events, and they account for five of six event wins since the summer break.

•    There are 11 bulls making their BFTS debuts in Round 1 of the GoDaddy.com Invitational, and another eight making their debuts in Round 2.

•    There are 13 riders competing in Portland this weekend who are not seeded on the tour, including the Top 5 money earners from the Challenger Tour and 8 other alternates.

•    There are 14 riders who have already earned in excess of $100,000 this year, three of whom are well over $200,000.

•    This week there are six riders listed on the Injury Report: Brian Canter, Ryan Dirteater, Pete Farley, Devon Mezei, Aaron Roy and Matt Werries.

•    There are four rematches in the opening round this weekend, and only Renato Nunes was successful earlier this season on Little Jimmy (in Round 2 of Tacoma for 84.75 points).

•    The Top 5 ranked bulls of Round 1 are Beer Goggles, Hank, Wolf Tickets, Original Prankster and High Roller.

•    There are five rematches in Round 2, two of which are for the fourth time. Two-time World Champion Chris Shivers will try to get his first score on Charlie Bullware after bucking off three times in the past three years, while Cody Campbell looks to go a perfect 4-for-4 on Devil’s Night.

•    The Top 5 ranked bulls of Round 2 are Northern Chill, Charlie Bullware, Crush Boss III, Dakota Cou and Smokey.

•    There have been a total of 87 riders who have competed on the BFTS this year. They have a cumulative riding average of 39.34 percent (1,161 of 2,951 outs).

•    In the Qualifier Standings, the 39th to 42nd positions – Reese Cates, Elliott Jacoby, Edvaldo Ferreira and Beau Hill – are all within $1,000 of each other.

•    The Top 3 riders in the World Standings each have 16 Top 10 finishes this season. The difference? Lostroh has five events compared to four by Mauney and two by Marchi.

•    Marchi has more 90-point rides this year, 11, than any other rider. However, Shivers has more in a career than anyone else, with 82 of them.

•    With seventy-eight 90-point rides this season, the riders are 47 shy of last year’s total of 125 with just three BFTS events remaining. But it’s the second most in the past six years, and the seventh highest total of all-time.

•    Three riders – Lostroh, Marchi and Cody Ford – are 50 percent or better on bulls with scores of 45 or more points.

•    Cody Nance currently leads the list of contenders for the title of Daisy Rookie of the Year by more than $14,000. The Tennessean native has only ridden the fourth most number of bulls among rookies, but by virtue of his event win in Pueblo, he’s won more money.

•    This rookie class consists of 16 first-year riders from 8 states and three countries.

•    There are 15 riders who account for 28 BFTS event wins, and not since Nance won in Pueblo has a rider won an event for the first time this season.

•    Five riders – Ryan Dirteater, Ford (twice), Ryan McConnel, Michael Manes and Nance – have won their first-ever BFTS events this season.

•    Of this year’s event winners, Ford took home the largest check of the season at $60,960 (and that was for a one-day event in Glendale, Ariz.).

•    Marchi won the event in Portland last year, while other previous winners include Sean Willingham (2006), Luke Snyder (2005), Jim Sharp (2002), Cody Custer and Corey Navarre (2001) and Shivers (2000).

•    For the second week in a row and third time in the past four events, Troubadour is the top ranked bull in the short round.

I also missed the last day of Portland but went to the video's and watched the short go rides. When I searched for Bull ridding I didn't get a CBS hit so didn't realize it was different, I watched the 2 and 3 which I thought would be all of the Portland PBR. Big surprise................as my DSL was out of order, I missed the short go. Why was it done this way very confusing. was it an hour program????? I guess I will have to be a better detective. After I watched the second day again I found out it was going to show on CBS but it was too late.

    Quick, but important correction:

I identified Cody Ford as having won the most money ($60,960) for a one day event this year when Kody Lostroh also won the same amount at a one-day event in Fresno. The note should have listed both riders. Sorry about that...my bad.

TWTX: You can see the final points standings (and other stats) for each season at www.pbrnow.com/season/index.cfm. For each cowboy who ended the 2004 in the top 10, I looked up their individual stats page. On their stats page, there's a tab for "Career by Year," which includes their year-end points totals and the number of points they earned at the Finals every year. I just subtracted the two to get the standings heading into the Finals.

FYI: Mike earned those points the FIRST year (2004) of the expanded format. Prior to 2004, the Finals were five rounds.

Okay, correction, I misread that the 8 rounds started in 2004.. :)

Thanks Shannon and Keith - Wow that is pretty impressive that Mike got that many
points with only 5 rounds and lower points per round. Where did you find the numbers?
In case I want to look any more up in the future.

I'm not sure what more I can add other than, yes, Mike Lee earned 4,821.75 points in the Finals that year. It's the most points ever won during the Finals. However, keep in mind that prior to 2004 there were only 5 rounds as opposed to 8, and the bonus for winning a round was 100 points instead of 400 points like it is now. In the five years since the PBR implimented the expanded format and bonus points -- including 2,500 points for winning -- the following riders earned the most points in Las Vegas:

    2004: Mike Lee 4,821.75
    2005: Guilherme Marchi 3,881.25
    2006: L.J. Jenkins 4,536.50
    2007: Wiley Petersen 4,066.25
    2008: Robson Palermo 4,472.25

TWTX: Interesting question! Near as I can tell, the standings heading into the 2004 Finals were something like:
    Adriano Moraes -- 9216
    Mike Lee -- 7316.5
    Justin McBride -- 7222.5
    Mike White -- 6553.5
    Brendon Clark -- 5842

    The final standings were:
    Mike Lee -- 12138.25
    Adriano Moraes -- 10018
    Mike White -- 8905.25
    Justin McBride -- 8669.5
    Greg Potter -- 7586.75

I only looked up stats for the guys who finished in the top 10 that year, so I may have missed a rider who was in the top 5 heading into the finals but dropped out of the top 10 at the end of the year due to a poor showing there. Feel free to correct me, KRC or anybody, if I miscalculated anything.

I have always been curious as to the 2004 championship where Mike Lee won
the Finals and the World title.. As to the points standings going into the
finals that year. Where Mike was in the standings, etc. I was not watching
then and if anyone knows this information or knows where I can find it I
    would appreciate it! Thanks.

Wow, the stats are really interesting... I just hope we can see a lot of
great rides!!! Looking forward to seeing it tonight!!

Great to see the stats. I always look up the bulls to see who has been riden and which bull rider rode the bull.
I sure hope Mike White rides his bull. Sounds like he has a pretty good bull to ride and his buddy Chiis has ridden him before.
Guilherme and Kody sound like their bulls are going to be tough but both of these bull riders exceptional, so they should ride them.
JB sounds like his bull might be pretty good for him to ride stats wise.
Sometime stats don't mean a thing when the time comes. Any of the bulls can be really rank.
Whatever happens I am excited to watch all of he riders ride.
I feel the same as the rest who have posted, I can't wait to see Copperhead Slinger again. He has always been a great bull.

I like these new "event notes" articles. They're like the "News and Notes" at the bottom of the articles used to be before they got taken over by advertisements and always have interesting information. I hadn't realized that every event winner since Pueblo had already won an event earlier this year. That's a pretty amazing statistic!

Love stats and facts. Hope there are no injuries this weekend. Also, hope that Lostroh makes it two in a row!!!!!!
