PUEBLO, Colo. (February 27, 2009) - A promising career was cut short Thursday morning.
Tom Teague expressed sadness Thursday afternoon during a conference call with Versus broadcasters and various members of the PBR, in announcing the untimely death of Cut Loose – previously known as I’m a Crook.
“Boyce (Knox) came back from Oklahoma…he noticed (Cut Loose) didn’t eat much that night,” Teague explained, “which was unusual for him … all of them have a good appetite. First time you see one not eat you say, ‘There’s something wrong with him.’”
The next day, when the bull was brought to Teague’s farm. he was dragging his hind feet a little bit. The following day, the bull would lie down and let people get within 30 feet or so before getting up. Even then it would take a few moments for him to steady the back part of his body.
It was uncommon for him to let anyone get that close; he was known as a mean bull.
Teague and Knox immediately contacted a vet and Cut Loose was treated. By the next day he seemed to be responding well and he wasn’t lying around as much, but it wasn’t long before he began getting worse.
Eventually it got to a point where he was unable to get up. Teague said, “That’s when we had to put him down.”
The North Carolina stock contractor, who has owned seven World Champion bulls, said it was emotionally tough to experience the ups and downs of the past week, but “you feel so sorry for him. All you can do is hope, and it (was) a sad situation.”
An autopsy performed Thursday night at a medical facility on the campus of North Carolina State University proved to be inconclusive. They were able to rule out any physical injuries, such as a broken back.
Teague said that results from numerous other tests – including a test for cancer in the spine – could take another two or three days.
It is not common for bulls or cows to develop cancer in the spinal cord, but it can have a paralyzing effect on the back ends of their bodies.
“It’s just one of many (tests),” said Teague, who noted that Cut Loose’s half-brother suffered the same fate. “She said until they find out what it is, we’re just talking in the dark.”
This year Cut Loose was covered just one time in seven tries, which coincidentally happened to be his first out of the 2009 season, when Mike White made the 8-second whistle for 87.50 points.
In that span his average bull score was 43.96 points; however, in his last five outs (including having bucked off Guilherme Marchi twice), his average bull score improved to 44.50 points.
His final appearance came less than two weeks ago in Oklahoma City when he bucked off Chris Shivers in Round 1. He sent him to the dirt in just 3.9 seconds on a reride after the two-time World Champion was given the option.
Cut Loose bucked again in short go and was picked by Marchi, who lasted only 3.2 seconds, in what will forever be his final out.

I know what they do because I have been watching, I have to agree that the Brazailians do indeed pull the bull rope to tight and the bull looses all the air in lungs. But you know PBR fans, the PBR is not going to do anything about it, its their show and they are not going to change a thing for anyone. It was just like I have suggested several time was putting thick foam over the rail that is just in front of the rider as they settling down on their bull and there have been two riders who have had their cheeks or foreheads cut open and knocked out, they were seriously hurt. It took a while but they did something. So I do hope that the PBR reads these and see that some of the FANS do know what they are taking about. Have to wait and see.

You perfect bigot! Why don't you just dry up and blow away? wE DON'T NEED THIS CRAP IN THE PBR. THERE'S NO ROOM FOR BIGOTRY IN THIS ORGANIZATION.
Your remarks are just insulting and have no place in our organization. What makes you think you're so much better than the Brazillian riders? You are NOT. You are just small minded and totally prejudiced and that has no place in our venue. Since you cannot even spell correctly, obviously you are ignorant anyway. My 30 years of !@#ociation with horses and dogs shows there are many genetic reasons for the early deaths of many special animals. Your !@#umption that they pull their ropes too tight are just unfounded. And your remarks about sending competitors back to their home countries in boats is just disgusting. Take it somewhere else, you skinhead!

If you've ever listened to any of the bull contractors on the PBR broadcasts, you know those bulls are a part of their families. My condolences to Mr. Teague, I'm sure that was a very difficult decision to put that bull down, but we do for our loved ones, human or otherwise, is what is best for them, not what is comfortable for us. I truly hate to hear of the p!@#ing of any of these magnificent animals before their time. May you have a wonderful life in the after-pasture, Cut Loose.

as a new fan of the PBR and a 15year veteran of english horse showing, any time you loose an athlete its a sad sad day. But what really makes it sad is how all the finger pointing still happens. Why cant we all just be sad for the loss of a great bull Cut Loose and quit blaming others for things we cant see. Yes it would be great if animals could tell us whats wrong, but they cant, so everyone needs to quit pointing fingers at Tom and the other contractors, riders, event planners etc. Why not show a little human comp!@#ion and support Tom and his staff for even noticing that something was not right with Cut Loose. You, Tom do a wonderful job taking care of your stock and Im sure Cut Loose is more comfortable now thanks to you. Thank you for all you do for the sport of PBR Sally for Northern CA

I am so sorry to hear about CUT LOOSE.These bulls are as much of a athlete as the cowboys that ride them. Some of turn and look at the audience as if to get recognized at how well they did.As far as the comment about Marchi cheating is a bunch of BULL!!! He worked hard for that title and deserved every bit of it.I am a great fan of the PBR and watch it every week. So Tom, these people who are saying all the negative things don't know what they are talking about.Again I am very sorry for your loss.

Tom Teague would not intentionly risk an animal and the riders who get on them would not intentionly cause harm to one either. I wonder about people who claim to have knowledge of animals and rodeo and make statements like some that are made in this blog.If you are getting your information from a book quit. They are wriiten from only one point of view.

I know what it is to loose a beloved animal. We buried our retired 17 year old first bucker a few months ago when he just stroked out.Sorry to hear about Cut Loose. For those people trying to blame riders and /or their style you sure missed a very important point that Tom made-“It’s just one of many (tests),” said Teague, who noted that Cut Loose’s half-brother suffered the same fate. “She said until they find out what it is, we’re just talking in the dark.” Seeing that his half brother died the same way it may and probably is some genetic defect. And yes Hotel California died of the disease that nearly killed him as a two year old.I believe that also like HYPP in quarter horses was a genetically tranmitted disease.

Sorry to hear about CUT LOOSE. Things happen. It's never easy to put an animal down,no matter if it your bull or your dog,but it's better than to watch them suffer.Cut Loose was a good bull--RIP

Cut Loose will be sadly missed; he was a beautiful animal. This will be a great loss for the fans and riders of the PBR. It will be a huge void to fill due to the entertainment this bull provided for everyone.

RWKR, I just checked the bull page to make sure. But before you go pointing the finger at Adriano, McBride was the last man to get on Hotel California. Unfortunately things happen to and with cattle that no one is responsible for, if you do own bucking stock like you say you should know that. Perhaps despite what was found out about Kid Rock's death being because of the collapse of his larynx you'd like to blame it on the way Dan Hendricks rode. Did you miss the line where they ruled out any physical problems on Cut Loose? They are trying to rule out cancer. Cancer, if that is the cause of his death, cannot be caused by the way a man pulls his rope. And shoot Chris Shivers also got on him that same weekend. Until it is proved beyond a doubt that the way a man pulls his rope is responsible for the animals death you ought to keep your mouth shut.

rwkr/ If all your B.S. about haveing bulls in the pbr was true.Dont plan on bucking them at any pbr events after the directers read your comments.Anybody who brings up how good their program and bloodlines are for no reason at all.Wants to act like they are real special trying to be a bigshot. You blew your cover stupid.I bet thats not the first thing you BLEW!!You should learn to keep your mouth shut.

Mr rwkr. You're comments are not racist, they are typicaaly American. I watct the PBR on sky television every day. The programs range from 2006 to the presnt tour. Theonly racist prople I have seen are the judges. Bearing in mind I have no national interst in this sport because there are no English riders, but I believe that the Bazilian rides are always marked lower than the Americans. Look back at all of Marchi's rides on Copperhead Slinger and compare them to Travis Briscoes 95. Surely Marchi's ride on White Magic was equal to that. What about Mauney's ride on Doctor Proctor for 88 last year even Ty Murray agreed that that was an over-scored ride. Justin McBride was agreat cowboy but some of his rides were horrendously over=scored The Brazilians are the best riders, nark them for their skill, not there nationality.

im upset that a great bucking bull raised by a great contractor was killed.. im going to keep my comments to myself and not start an arguement over a great sport... sorry for upsetting anybody!!!

my remarks are not racist and if people find them offensive i apologize. i dont want to get into how i feel about pulling too much rope into bulls. i do believe that it dos cause problems for the bulss health. FYI we do have bulls bucking in the pbr and doing well. we have invested a lot of oney in our bloodlines such as a little yellow jack et son who we use as our primary breeding bull and now are very excited about the pen of yearlings and 2 year old we are raising along with our calves being born in the spring. we have crossed him to cows out of great bulls such as erkle, bodacious, skat kat, and gunslinger. we presently have 5 of our long yearling bulls registered to buck in the american futurity championship in oklahoma in may. so i tink that answers the fact that i am credible when it comes to raising bucking bulls. and no we dont hit the small shows. sorry for offending you but i would hate to find out im right about the bull dieing due to being injured by a rider pulling too much rope into them... wouldn't u?

Fo shizzle, you are right. Maybe Brazilians typically pull a rope tight in Brazil, but it is not allowed in the PBR. To insinuate Marchi possibly caused the death of Cut Loose is wrong and deflammatory bordering on racism. The terrible comment about the leaky boat is in extremely poor taste, and it's too bad there are people who actually feel this way.
Heck, I live in NC and would love Mauney to win the world this year, but I don't feel like Marchi cheated to win it last year. He deserved it fair and square. As far as I know, he received no fines for taking too long in the chute.
Hopefully, we'll find out exactly what happened to Cut Loose soon. It is a terrible loss.
fo shizzle February 28, 2009
rwkr....... I don't know about your bull riding credentials. Frankly I don't care. It is common to see a 2nd person help pull a rider's bull rope. But that doesn't matter, either. The real point of my post is this: I find your comment regarding "putting the Brazilians in a leaky boat" to be in the worst possible taste. I also consider it a not-so-subtle racist remark. Did it occur to you perhaps the Brazilian riders' families read this website to keep up with their loved-ones career? Perhaps they might find your comments offensive. You say that you raise bulls. Any interest in having them at PBR events? Probably. You need to understand that the world around you is changing and the PBR would not look kindly on your comments from one of their contractors. Now, if you stock can't (and never will) produce at the PBR level, I'm sure you 1955 attitudes are welcome at the smaller out-of-the-way events.

Mr.Teague and Family, So SORRY to hear about your loss of Cut Loose. There is not a weekend that our family doesnt watch the PBR, he was an extremely talented bull and will be greatly missed. As for everyone arguing over the cause of a bulls death, I dont believe now is is the time speculation. Feelings should be taken into consideration and only condolences should be portrayed. It takes great dedication to care for any animal no matter how big or small and I truly believe that Tom and his staff have done a wonderful job caring for their stock!!!!!!

dear mr chicken... u have no idea what u are talking about... read the book "fried twinkies, buckle bunnies, and bull riders" by Josh Peter... he tells u exactly how adriano had 3 guys pulling his rope on hotel california... since then the rules have been changed to 1 guy pulling your rope and the risers have been made smaller so they cant get so much rope into them. i think they should ban those brazilian ropes altogether cause they squeeze the life out of the bulls and take the edge out of them.i agree with herrington - "put the brazilians on a leaky boat and send them home" as far as me not knowing what i talk about - i come from a bullriding family and am in the business of raising bucking bulls... i say go jb... he going to take the world without cheating!!!!

rwkr, you don't know what you're talking about. Hotel California had Johne's Disease and finally died of kidney failure. Sure there has been some soaking of the bulls, but there's a back judge there that strictly monitors the chutes nowadays, and if someone stays in the chute too long, they're fined severely.
My condolences to Tom Teague and his family. Cut Loose was a great bull with a promising future. He will be missed.
rwkr February 28, 2009
too bad to see such a great bull like cut loose have to be put down. i think it looks a lot like the way hotel california died after adriano had 3 guys pulling his rope. i haven't seen the marchi ride yet but i'm sure he pulled all the rope he could into him. its good to know that there are so many people raising good bucking bulls out there and hopefully tom will be able to replace cut loose!!!!

Also Im not sure how many people know that last Nov. Walk This Way, also p!@#ed away. He had an infection in his chest cavity that was untreatable . Bad Co. said they just tried to make him as comfortable as they could , like we would all do to a member of our fmily.

my favorite thing about the PBR is the bulls, Beautiful powerful athletes. Mr Teague no doubt did all he could , after all these animals , unlike people cant tell us if anything is wrong. Very sorry for your loss . Most PBR fans feel this way Im sure.

Maybe Tom Teague shouldn't have been so boastful about how good his bulls are, because some native belief say if one brags so much about oneself, like in this instant Tom boast about how good his bulls are above everyones else's..it it turns on you, something bad comes about.

Mr. Teague, sorry to hear of a loss, never heard of the bull, still all the same it is a loss, I know how it is when you have a pet, not to mention bulls, pets- are like family and if they go without notice, it's a saddening thing,...we used to raise rabbits for pets, and had one in the family for like 9 yrs,..and he died one night and we all felt the lost. so please accept my condolences.
