Major league money

Earlier this week, I interviewed a talented bull rider who wins big on the national pro rodeo circuit.

And I've heard him make this misinformed statement more than once: "The only real difference in riding bulls in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the Professional Bull Riders is the $1 million bonus that's awarded to the PBR World Champion."

Bucking the past

After reading the comments of fans who bad-mouthed the PBR's Dickies Iron Cowboy Invitational last weekend at Cowboys Stadium, let me say I understand where you're coming from.

But you're wrong. Dead wrong. Can't-hang-on-for-8-seconds wrong.

Breaking tradition, building a dream

As he discussed the preparation of Cowboys Stadium for tonight's big show, Cody Lambert couldn't have said it better.

"You have to remember, this is Randy Bernard's last (major) event for the PBR," Lambert said. "Randy wants to go out in style, and this is a very important event to him. We don't enjoy seeing him go. We hate to see him go, but we're going to do everything to make an event that he's really proud of."

Making history, again

In one week, the Professional Bull Riders is coming to the posh Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Why is the event worth showing up for? Why buy a ticket?

'There's no one like him'

The big news: PBR CEO Randy Bernard resigns.

Earlier this week, Bernard resigned from his 15-year position as chief executive officer of the Professional Bull Riders. It's effective on March 1 when he takes over the leadership position of motorsports' Indy Racing League.

Meet the press

It was one eye-opening experience to watch Randy Bernard, Ty Murray and Cody Lambert meet members of the media and sell the PBR.

Earlier this week, the three men visited the Fort Worth Star-Telegram newsroom and touted the Dickies Iron Cowboy Invitational, which is scheduled for Feb. 20 at Cowboy It was one eye-opening experience to watch Randy Bernard, Ty Murray and Cody Lambert meet members of the media and sell the PBR.

Good call

The PBR sent its judges a stark reminder this week: Get it right or get out.

After witnessing the suspension of veteran judge Jeff Shearer for his bad call at last weekend's tour stop in Sacramento, Calif., officials will think twice before they post the scores throughout tonight's show in Anaheim.

Out of control

It was far from what I hoped for.

Hopefully, the next time Code Blue is ridden for the 8 second count, it'll be for a lot more than a meager score of 76.25 points. When such a high-caliber bull is conquered, I would hope to see at least a 95.

Urban cowboys

Slade Long makes a great point.

The bucking bull statistics expert, who writes the "Morning Line" feature for the Professional Bull Riders' Web site, began his Jan. 8 commentary by discussing the significance of the PBR's presence this weekend in Madison Square Garden.

Opposition research

As a writer, it's easy to get too caught up in covering cowboys over the bulls.

After all, the big attention-grabber in the Professional Bull Riders is the $1 million bonus that's annually awarded to the World Champion Bull Rider.

There's also a tendency to write on cowboys over animals because people talk and bulls won't say a word. But at the same time, a writer never goes wrong by giving the bovines lots of pub because their stories are so compelling.
