Well, watching Ty Murray dance actually gave me a heart attack.
In case you haven't noticed, it's been a pretty unusual two weeks for me. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have a heart attack, and it's very confusing why I had one before many of my fried-food-eating friends.
But life has moved on and we are coping here in the Rasmussen house.
Both of my stent procedures were successful and my health just gets better every day. I started at a cardiac rehab center on Monday and I should start jogging a bit on Friday. I am walking very briskly and my heart rate is low and I barely get out of breath.
In a sense, I'm better off than I was three weeks ago.
The reality of getting tired easily, not feeling well and just needing to be patient was a little tough for me. I thought I should just be able to take off and run three miles with no worries, but it just doesn't work that way. Because I was in such great shape I should recover quickly.
It was a little confusing and, yes, most of you are right--it shouldn't have happened to me.
Even the doctors said that they just can't explain some heart attacks. I have no family history, I'm in great physical condition (exhibit A: calves!) and my cholesterol wasn't even high.
But I will now fill you fans in on what I think was a big contributor.
I just haven't handled stress and anxiety very well the last couple years. I know my job looks like a very random, crazy and easy thing, but I put tons of pressure on myself out in the arena every night. Even worse, I stress over the business side of things, the future, my kids, the travel, sleep, money...get the idea?
I've been advised by my doctor that I better change the way I do things a little bit.
So if I don't happen to be at a challenger event somewhere that you've seen me before, sorry. And if you are one of those people producing an event and I tell you I can't be there, don't tell me I HAVE to go--because I don't.
If I seem to express my opinion about things a little more I'm just letting it out instead of bottling it up as stress (good excuse).
For instance, I cannot express with words what it means that many of you have contributed to my hospital that saved me that day. I want good to come out of this.
Most of the comments under the website article were awesome, but I didn't anticipate some people using it as their little place to express their opinion about rural health care.
Sorry I live in the "boonies," but that doesn't mean someone's life who lives in a city is more valuable. Next time you're eating a steak or loaf of bread, remember, it came from someone who lives out in the sticks (and they probably have made a couple trips to the local ER sometime in their life).
Whew, that feels good.
Speaking of trips to the ER, is it me or are there some huge wusses on Dancing With the Stars?
I need to call Ty and ask him if it just drives him crazy when someone pulls a hammy and has to ride in the dang ambulance! Holy crap, grow a pair and just catch a lift to the clinic!
It's kind of funny, really.
I will say Ty is doing great on the show that I never, ever watched before this year. Don't tell anyone, but I even voted. I told him he would dance better if he shaved his legs and tanned a bit, but no dice.
Ty left me a very sincere long voice mail the day of my episode, and I appreciate it very much. He's a good friend and if I told you the message I would have to beep out 2/3 of it.
So here's what I'm shooting for.
The weekend of April 17 is the Billings PBR, and I want to be there. I'm going to have to ease into things and be very careful to avoid injury out in the arena because of the meds I'm on, but I want to come back in front of Montana fans.
The support from you PBR fans has been a bit overwhelming.
Like our crew on the road, the fans of the PBR are a big family and I realize now what all of you mean to my family and me. There are some real ups and downs emotionally involved during all this, and you have helped me deal with it.
For now, I get to watch my daughter at the State Gymnastics Meet this weekend and even go to a wedding next week. These are things I usually miss so I'm going to stop and smell those roses while I can.
Well, all the years joking about boneless chicken and baked salmon...guess what's on my menu, a lot now?
Laugh Always, Flint.
hugs, from California....in the sticks!!!
I could tell when you were out there performing, you were under a bit of stress. Your not a bull fighter, or a bull rider, so you had to make yourself known and threw yourself into the act, to me it was obvious.
Now you have learned the secret, life will go on without you, so take care and stay in it as long as you can.
My motto is Seize the day by living the life you've imagined, tomorrow may never come.
Take care

Hey, man, I had a stint put in. in 2001, and have had several heart attacks since mostly stress related but the stint is doing fine. They have gone in twice to take a look last time was Dec. 08, had a Heart attack on Christmas Day. Stress related. I know. But they check me out really good and I got out on Monday after Christmas.
Now you take care and I will write more. But as the other RN said LIVE ONE DAY AT A TIME AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT TOMMAROW. Your family can't do with out you but believe me the PBR can, or less often. You just take care you are to young to be this up set. I am 62 and I have enough for both of us. I know you are a man and you worry about family, money, job, and so on, but youngman, believe when you are dead and gone this will still be a probem. So take care of what you can and let us know what we can do to help with the rest. PBR fans are the best and we can and will help when we can. OK>
Love to you and your family, know you and your family are in my prayers, pbrgirl66
I'm just messin with you but in all seriousness, please take care of yourself and come back to us to when you can. We luv ya!
We sure miss you BUT we only want you back when you are ready. We are real fans and can wait for you as long as you need us to. Our family, who lives in the STICKS here in Maine (where it is hard to find a cowboy to lean on) have been through the same deal. Take your time and go at your pace, everything will return to normal and even better than the normal you were used to.
Looking forward to Montana, all you have to do that night is stand up and wave to us. Goodspeed.
Some people just like to stir the pot every chance they get. Talk about inappropriate. *sigh* Sorry you had to deal with that sort of thing.
I'm glad you are feeling well. I know what kind of havoc stress can do to your body and have had to start changing things for myself, too. Keep on doing what feels right for you and don't let anyone try to push you into anything.
Take care and I'm hoping to see you at my next live show!
It was so good to hear from you. You did what you are so good at ..... making me laugh and smile while reading your blog. The one and only Flint has returned.
You have definately been missed. No one can take your place and come close to doing what you do with the intensity that you do it.
Obey your doctors and continue to make a full recovery. Enjoy the rest and doing the things that you are getting to participate in. There will be days down the road that you will wish you had the time once again to do them.
Looking forward to when you are 100% and back in the arena. Take care and God Bless!

PS I've always noticed your calves.... : )
IT HITS LIKE A TON OF BRICKS DOESN'T IT? NOT YOU. YOU'RE HEALTHLY, FIT, EAT RIGHT. STRESS DOES IT TO YOU. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT. NEVER AGAIN! LEARN TO SAY NO, SPEAK YOUR MIND, AND APPRECIATE THOSE THAT REALLY MATTER TO YOU. YOU'LL GET THROUGH THIS WITH A BETTER APPRECIATION OF WHAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT IN YOUR LIFE. HOPE TO SEE YOU IN VEGAS WHEN WE COME TO SEE RUSTY RIDE!
I am a heart attack survivor also and just want to let you know that things will get better and better. My heart attack came on my birthday (some people just don't know how to celebrate) so I look at it as a special b'day gift - do better or else!!! Good luck and we miss you!
Wanted to tell you that my husband and I took our 11 year old grandson to the pbr in Kansas City. Now this kid is a city kid and has never been interested in rodeo of any kind. Not even when his uncle team ropes or bull rides. After seeing you there, he can hardly wait to go again. The only autograph he wanted was yours. Sorry we didn't get one for him or the chanc to meet you there. Hopefully, and with God's help, we will see you there again next year. We hope to get to go to the Tulsa event in July. Unless the son is team roping somewhere.

I am so thankful you are doing okay.
Each year I take my Mom..Aggie..85 and my Dad..Ray..92 to Billings and I am so glad we will be able to see you.
I am hoping you will be able to sing your special song that you sang at the finals.I go every year and my parents used to go but it's abit much for them now. I so appreciate your talent. You are in our prayers and see you in Billings
I just read your longer blog about the heart attack. I'm like you--how many people have told me the following re eliminating stress and anxiety in my life!!! That hit home reading it from you cuz i don' thave 1/10th the sense of humor you have! Best wishes getting back to 100%!!!!!!!

We are love you here in Pendleton.
Glad you're learning to let go and relax - it's not easy, and until you get a little warning, as you did, you don't even realize how much stress you have running through your veins. I miss you on the BFTS, but it'll be there when you're ready to go back. Do it in YOUR time. Saying "no" once in awhile feels pretty darn good, doesn't it! Enjoy your family time and I'm so glad you're feeling better. Take good care - you're in my prayers and thoughts.

Thank you so much for keeping us informed about what is happening to. I am glad to hear you are on the mend and doing well. I am thankful that people live in the "boonies" to make this a great nation, and whatever it takes to save a person life is okay by me. Continue on the road to good health. God be with you.

You were certainly missed in Birmingham. We were there and the show was just not the same without you! We held up our green signs wishing you well, but didn't get any air time! Please take care of yourself and your family, I lost my dad when he was 57 to heart disease...as much as we love you, always put your family first. There is a healthy way to juggle both, but like you said, it may mean cutting back!
Hope to see you in Nashville!

God Bless and get well soon.
Everyday out here in Oklahoma, there's a prayer with your name on it. Get well friend.
My wife and I are huge fans of the PBR and have had the pleasure of attending the last two World Finals Events and a PBR event in Tampa earlier this year. While we love watching all those rank bulls and amazing cowboy's, it has been just awesome being able to watch you perform!
Our kids were finally able to come to an event with us this past February in Tampa and they had a blast too! They just raved about you and even today talk about how much fun you were! They are huge Flint fans!
We have you and your family in our prayers for a speedy recovery and we're glad you have plans to get back on tour soon. We're also glad to hear about some of your new perspectives on stress and other important things in life. Way to go and good luck for the rest of 2009!!
We must be your biggest English fans. We have been visiting Cheyenne for years to watch the P.B.R. and enjoy you. You're the only Rodeo entertainer who has ever made us really laugh.
We're so glad you've come through your heart attack in one piece. We would never have imagined you, of all people to have one. The last time we saw you you were hurdling chairs at the Frontier Park in Cheyenne. Being so fit has obviously played a big part in your recovery. We will have to try it!!
We can't visit Cheyenne this year but we'll be wishing you all the best. Take care in Billings. We will be thinking of you
I am glad to know you doing well!
Faith
I appreciate your candid remarks and pray for your speedy recovery.
This episode of your life was no way to remember my birthday, you could have just send a card. But in all seriousness...We are looking forward to your return & see you again here in Vegas!!!
prayers are with you and your family and I look forward to seeing you WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT. Live on

My 9-year-old made you a "Get Well" sign for the Tacoma Dome event, it didn't make TV but hopefully they at least got some stills of the many signs that were there. You are thought of and missed at every event. But not one of the people missing you would trade 3 days of appearances by you for even one day of lost recovery time! Take care of you first. Heck, you're building up a lot of demand, the crowd will react so well when they announce you, you can ask for a raise! ;)
Best wishes, Kitt (Alexa's Mom)
I am so happy to see this blog from you.
You are definitely the last person in the world I would have expected this to have happened to.
Take your time getting well. All your fans are willing to be patient.
I'm glad to see you up & around brother! I know you're as tough as them boys riding those bulls. I wish you well & hang tough!
Oh! by the way I love that new jingle of yours! Keep em laugh & God bless you brother.

Along with seeing you again, we'd like to hear from you.
We love you, Flint! and we all wish you the very best of life, health, fun, and love!
Great to see that you are doing so well. I was sorry to hear about your Heart Attack. I was shocked. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I should take a page from your book about stress. Like you I tend to stess over everything. Thanks for all of the hard work you put into making a PBR event fun and enjoyable.
