‘That’s what team work is all about’

Chelsie and I are really happy that our scores have continued to get better each week because that's half of it and we know we have the cowboy community behind us. The judges' scores are half of it and we're not killing them yet, but we have gone up from 14 to 20 and now tonight we were 23.

With Chelsie slipping tonight that was something we hadn't rehearsed, but, at the same time, she has prepared me for mishaps or mistakes. She always told me that if something happens just get back to her and she'll get us back to the right count.

When something like that does happen it breaks the chain of what we're doing and she has to put us on the right mark because every beat of the song is a count. You're supposed to be in a certain place doing a certain step and she got us right back on track.

All I could think about was that I needed to get her back up as fast as I could.

Unfortunately, the fall took out a really great part of the routine that Chelsie was really looking forward to, where we both spin around together. But the main thing is that we kept going.

I told Chelsie that we've been practicing several hundred hours together and I've made about 847,000 mistakes and that's only your second one. I think there might have been one time in practice where she forgot a step and the slip tonight was her second one.

I owed her that one.

She's a champ and she's a tough kid. It happened, but I thought she handled it good and she didn't freak out, got right back up and we went on with it. Afterwards in the press line she was a great sport about it.

That's just the thing, when she fell I just knew I had to keep hold of her to keep her from going all the way down and then get her back to her feet because that's what team work is all about.

It has to help us that our scores are going up.

Like I said, I really feel like we have the support from the western lifestyle – farmers and ranchers – so, I think, the fans are doing their part and we have to keep doing ours by improving our score every week.

Right now Jewel and I are going to have dinner with Justin McBride and Randy Bernard. They were both there tonight and in full support.

You did so awesome tonight Ty...I'm so proud of you <3
When Chelsie fell, my stomach kind of dropped, but you got her up and continued dancing, making it seem like it didn't even affect you. You did awesome and you and Chelsie are one of the best couples on the show this season. And the top hat...ADORABLE! Your 'cool' face was pretty awesome too ;)

Ty,
You and Chelsie were AWESOME tonight! I'm so proud of both of you. When they showed Jewel in the crowd, she had pride written all over her face. You two must be having the time of your life! Keep working hard...give the judges something to talk about. You have my votes!

Ty and Chelsie - WOW....... What a performance, the fox trot fit the two of you nicely, it was beautiful. I love your partnership, it really showed when Chelsie slipped, you two did not skip a beat. I'm telling ya, you both look like pro's (that's a compliment to Chelsie)What a great teacher. I love you, your PROUD sister. Kerri

Ty, You were amazing tonight!! When I saw Chelsie slip (it appeared that her dress got caught on her shoe) my heart sank, but you took control and were dancing away again and oh so smooth. We are all so excited and happy for you - all of the hours of hard work you've put into this is truly paying the dividends. I'm glad you and Jewel are getting in a little down time - enjoy the movie!
Your PBR fans here in Santa Rosa are so proud of you!

Ty, you made me swoon tonight--that beginning part on the stairs alone was worth the 8s.

You two are a great pair and Chelsie is a wonderful choreographer. The mishap was unfortunate, but you handled it beautifully. Good job! It's easy to tell you are taking this seriously--even to those who don't read your blogs regularly.

Good luck tomorrow night! You got all my votes.

My old heart did skip a beat tonight when Chelsie slipped but you didn't stop and got right on track that was great.
Congratulations on a 23 way to go

Ty You and Chelsie were great! After the fall I wasn't sure I saw it! You guys just kept dancing and that was the best thing you could have done. The top hat was snazzy, the tails were sophisticated, your dance and line were great!
# Posted By amcarter | 3/24/09 3:03 AM
Ty You and Chelsie were great tonight. The fact that you were able to get back on count after the fall is a testament to your teams working together and trust. I am not a cow girl, nor do I live the western life but I know a winner when I see one! Jewel knew what she was doing picking you! 8^D Keep dancing like you rode bulls and you will certainly be successful.

Awesome job! You are really beginning to look more at ease out there. When Chelsie slipped, it looked so natural for you to lift her up and keep going. So glad that she was not hurt. Keep up the great work!
# Posted By Susan | 3/24/09 6:25 AM
For me, you're what Dancing with the Stars is all about, Ty: Someone with no experience learning to dance. And boy, are you learning. You were great tonight. Chelsie, too. Watching the two of you handle a big mistake so graciously was almost better than if it hadn't happened at all. (Not that I wish mistakes on you, just that I'm proud of how you both handled it.)
# Posted By jerri | 3/24/09 7:22 AM
Ty,
I haven't watched many episodes of this show. We tuned in tonight and caught your awesome routine. The way you pulled it together for your partner truly impressed me. I don't know how many of the "stars" could have done what you did. You deserve all the votes and you sure have mine.
Great job!!
# Posted By Terri | 3/24/09 7:32 AM
Ty, You were worried for what? You and Chelsie were "Great" See even pro's can make a mistake.
Keep going and prove everybody can dance.
You've got my votes.
# Posted By Barb | 3/24/09 7:36 AM
It was, again, a joy to watch you both dance. I knew the foxtrot would fit you like a glove, and it did. I believe that even Chelsie's fall was an opportunity for the judges to see what both of you were made out of--you did not lose your composure and Chelsie is such a strong dancer, she recovered instantly. I guess we saw character points last night in addition to the grace and beautiful line you both made in foxtrot. Dance on! I've texted my fingers to the bone voting for you!
# Posted By Marie | 3/24/09 8:02 AM
Ty,
I thought that you and Chealsie did a wonderful job tonight and the judges did the right thing by praising your much noticable improvement and giving you the score that you worked hard at to earn!!!! I especially loved what Carrie Ann said about your being "professional" in the way you handled Chealsie's slip and kept her from hitting the floor completely and stayed on time and kept the routine going. Thank God for that for those strong arms and awesome upper-body strength!!! Jewel just beamed the whole time you were on the floor! She's one lucky lady!!!
Voting for you in Virginia!!!

Ty, you and Chelsie were terrific last night! Like everyone else, my heart stopped when Chelsie slipped and I just wanted to cry! But you picked her up and kept on dancing! All I could say was "wow"! Both of you were gorgeous and showed true professionalism. Chelsie is obviously a stronger pro than we know. And you, oh my goodness...how dapper were you with the top hat? I luv when the cameras cut to Jewel, especially last night. Her face was beaming! You are really something special to us fans, too, Ty! Keep up the good work! Congrats to both of you!

Ty and Chelsie,
You were so cool tonight..what a long way you have come. We're all so excited for you; the momentum is going your way. We're voting our allowed number of times. Good luck.
# Posted By Peggy | 3/24/09 8:53 AM
You deserve all the support you're getting from your Western fans, and more. But even an East Coast city girl can appreciate a strong work ethic, great sense of humor and the heart of a champion when she sees it. You're a role model for anyone who believes that striving for excellence is worth the effort. And you're fun to watch. God bless.
# Posted By Annie | 3/24/09 9:17 AM
Ty,
You and Chelsie really hit the mark last night. Someone said it earlier, it is really about character and teamwork and you both came through with flying colors on both counts. Can't say that I am surprised.
This is the best season of the show for me. You bring something over and above the lights, the glitter, the fancy wardrobe, the showmanship and the perfectly executed dance steps to the mix. You bring strength of character, strength of will, determination and complete commitment that is all wrapped up in the total package of a real, down-to-earth western cowboy.
Ty and Chelsie, do you think you could choreograph one of your upcoming dances to a George Strait number? And, do you think that Jewel could perform again on the show? If so, that would make it just about perfect for me.
Keep plugging away and we'll keep sending our votes.

Ty:
You were so smooth out there last night, I was very impressed and proud. Even when Chelsie slipped you handled it like a pro! You looked very handsome in that tux and top hat too. This cowgirl used all 36 votes she had for you and Chelsie, keep up the great work!

Ty, You were great to watch and awsome to see recover. The viewers saw a lighter side of you after the fact. You were talking and reacting so sincere. That's the Ty that the Rodeo Nation knows so well, let your hair down! (?) Your skills, personal character and determination are showing; perservere, we love and admire you!

Ty ~ I received an email this morning from a friend who owns & runs a dance studio. She praised your efforts highly saying she was so impressed by the grace & elegance you displayed. Coming from a professional that's quite a compliment.

You did a super job keeping Chelsie on her feet last night. Wishing you well to the very end of the show.

Ty,
You and Chelsie were awesome, even with the fall. You just cowboyed up. But I have to tease you about throwing your top hat. You were never one to throw your cowboy hat!

We've never watched Dancing with the Stars before. But we sure are now!
# Posted By Kathy | 3/24/09 7:07 PM
Ty - unfortunately I wasn't able to see monday's dance live but I heard what happened on the radio the next morning, which for this particular station a mention of DWTS and not american idol is rare not to mention the compliments you got, I was mortified that maybe it was you that slipped and when I heard it was Chelsie and how professionally you handled it I was like "Atta boy, Ty!!" Of course, I DVR'd it and watched it tuesday afternoon and anyone who is not impressed with your improvemnt should be shot! I will definitely be watching tuesday's results show and giving my votes to my fave dancers. It's great to see how much better and more confident you get every week... even though you still look kinda scared when you're in front of the judges. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!! We love you in Grand Rapids, MI.
# Posted By Tracey | 3/24/09 7:12 PM
BTW Ty- we DO miss you in the booth but seeing this side of you is worth it!! Alyson is right... the top hat was very suave but the "cool" face says it all.
# Posted By Tracey | 3/24/09 7:17 PM
Ty you and Chelsie looked fabulous tonight. The foxtrot seemed to be your dance. Great save w/ Chelsie's slip and keep the great smile. When the camera went to Jewel she had a smile as big as yours. My Hero!
Do you now realize that Gene Kelly was an athlete? who could sing and look good in front of a camera? He was a favorite, if I read the reminiscence right, because he was there for his partners.
What little boy would watch a movie that wasn't a current hot topic? So why would anyone expect a guy to watch old movies, and especially Gene Kelly movies.
You're not a kid anymore. Spring for the Gene Kelly collection, and, surprise, his characters, fictional, could be modeled on a good cowboy, such as yourself.
hoodathunkit.
And when I saw you so in the moment and considerate of your partner: you will be a great dad. Lucky kids.
You can afford more than ya'll can have yourselves, ya know. no waiting.
Keep dancin!

Please know that you're backed by more than those who are able to live the western lifestyle. Even us northern city-dwellers recognize talent, skill, dedication, and courage when we see: in the arena or in the ballroom. Keep ridin'.

Ty, I don't know anything about rodeos, but I have quickly become your fan on DWTS! Your attitude is so great, and you seem so genuine, kind and down-to-earth - I am sure you are picking up fans and admirers with this experience. Even with the slips, you looked so smooth with your steps and movements, and you looked great in the top hat. I think the moment of the night was your's and Chelsea's recovery after the fall. I wish you both the best with the Lindy Hop. L
