It's been a busy week here at the Rasmussen Ranch now that temperatures are in the 50's and we can ride those barrel horses outside. As I sit here at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday – dressed for a workout and not quite packed for this weekend's Florida trip – I thought I should squeeze in time for a blog.
So here I go.
For some reason, I just popped a quick look at the website before I did this and I noticed that some of the PBR big-wigs are going to address some fan concerns. That took some pressure off me because I definitely have some opinions on things.
But look at what they have to say and try to understand things from their perspective. There's a lot that goes on in the inner-workings of the organization that people never see, so try to have an open mind.
Maybe I look at things different also. I think in the PBR we have to tow that fine line between professional sporting event and being an entertainment show.
You die-hard fans out there follow us every week and know the standings, statistics and eating habits of your favorite riders. But we have to cater to you as well as the people that are coming out to see an extreme exhibition and an entertaining show.
I have accepted the fact that in Madison Square Garden, to many of the fans, we are the circus. Hey, as long as they pay to get in! It's a hard balance that no other sport has to tackle and I think we do it pretty well.
TV coverage is something that I am just starting to understand, but it is a creature in itself. One thought only on that: Putting some of our events on NBC is the only way that many of the people in this country out there in TV land will ever be exposed to our sport.
That is a fact.
Anyway, I like to keep my blogs light, but I just think it is too bad many of the people with negative things to say right now can't sit down with some of us face to face to understand the decisions made.
Turn on the news, people. Things just ain't the same this year as they have been in the past few. Take a breath and get through it with us.
I would like to share a story.
Flying home from North Carolina last weekend – what a great event! – I started a conversation with our flight attendant. She was from a small town outside of Salt Lake City called Tooele.
Keep in mind, I did not tell her what I did for a living or who I worked for. I did, however, tell her that I had been to the rodeo in Tooele.
She told me that she never really had much interest in rodeo, but on the previous night she stumbled upon this thing called the PBR on TV. She explained to me how they had this thing called the draft, where the riders go up on stage and pick their own bulls they are going to ride.
"The crowd even cheered for some of the bulls louder than the riders," she told me.
She just thought it was so cool to see young, hot cowboys getting to talk and explain their picks on TV. Young and hot were her words, not mine. She wants to watch it more because it sparked her interest in something that's been around for years, but had a new twist to draw her in.
A new fan drawn in because it's just got a little different twist--and she got to see cowboys strut up on stage. You diehards may think she's shallow, but, dang it, she's gonna watch.
I don't usually like to address specific comments posted on the website because sometimes I just don't read them. But there was one under one of Ty's blogs that I have to address.
An individual had some pretty critical comments about the bullfighters. Ya know, sometimes people just veer into subjects that they shouldn't touch.
To that person I say this: the World Finals is the only event that we use four bullfighters and they rotate in and out two at a time unless there is a wreck that needs them all.
Also, I have never seen Joe, Shorty or Frank cover somebody up as a means of protection. There are moves they make that take the bull away from the situation. They are, however, instructed not to move riders if there is any chance of a neck or back injury, so maybe in that situation they might have to cover them.
I think fan comments are a wonderful thing. And, oh, don't think we don't appreciate the passion that our fans have for our sport. That is why I choose to keep my blood pressure in check and let the fans "duke it out" online--most of the time it is quite entertaining.
But I couldn't sit idly by on this one. Joe, Shorty and Frank make up the greatest trio of bullfighters I have ever seen in my career in rodeo or PBR. So unless you have some personal bone to pick...you might not want to touch that one again.
Whew. I got that off my chest. Those guys are like my brothers so I have to defend them, since they would just let their incredible work do the talking.
Well, it's off to Florida in the morning.
We haven't been to Tampa in a couple years, but we've been talking about how we missed the great fans there last year. I'm anxious to be in Tallahassee for the first time too.
By the way, on those nights with 40 riders instead of 45, look for me to have a little more creative freedom and make the show just a tad more fun. When you look at the big picture: it isn't brain surgery or the war on terror, folks. It's a great show with cowboys as the stars and some clown as the side show.
The Super Bowl gets Springsteen and you get me. It's just supposed to be a fun night, so keep havin' fun and keep being great fans.
Laugh Always, Flint
These heroes are in every bull riding league. It is a must to go out of your way to thank them for a job well done. Mostof the saves we see have saved many lives. Jeana ND
Anyway, I read that comment about the bullfighters & I agree with you 100%. There is really NO INSTANCE, in any situation, for any reason I feel anyone should be critical of our bull fighters. HELLOOO... these are people whose job it is to protect the bull riders that we love, & oh by the way, if necessary, be the bull bait if the bull wants to kick some a%# & take some names. OK, OK, you can feel free to critique their method of doing their job when you get YOURSELF out there & do what they do half as well as they do it. I think the fact that the bull riders appreciate them & speak so highly of them & what they do week in & week out speaks for itself. All that to say, right on man! I'm with ya, Flint. Say what you want about anyone or anything else, but don't mess with our bull fighters.
As far as the fan comments, we love our PBR & I think the fact that we have so much passion for it, just shows our love for it & the fact that we do feel a sortof ownership along with the bigwhigs. And, hey I agree 100% with the flight attendant, shallow or not, a large portion of our enjoyment of the sport is the eye candy. SO BRING IT ON!!! I mean, we ladies KNOW that you gentleman don't frequent the Copenhagen booths at the events for the lure of free tobacco. ; ) I don't see THAT many people dipping at the events! So, let's just be real here. Our bull riders, bull fighters & YOU Flint happen to be super hot! So, what's the harm in enjoying all of God's creation??
Anyway, my daughter & I were in the behind the chute seats this past weekend in Winston Salem on Saturday night & we're the ones who won the Enterprise hat from you, Flint! We've been trying to get that thing for over a year now! It was the most amazing night we've ever had & we're now planning to get behind the chute seats at least once a year as a special treat. I'd do it everytime if I could but, uh, they're kinda steep, if ya know what I mean!
So, hope this weekend is half as great as last weekend was. It couldn't possibly be any better. I've never seen so many riders riding SO well, from the outstanding rides by our veteran riders like The Hermanator (is he awesome or what!!), Mike White & Chris Shivers all the way thru to the newest on tour like Skeeter! He's a class act. What a great kid that is! I hope to see him around for a long, long time. Didn't mean to be so long winded here, but hey I love me some PBR, what can I tell ya!!?? Oh, & tell Zack Brown I hope he's doing better & will be riding this weekend. Think I kinda fell in love with him Saturday! ; )
Can't wait to see you in KC!!
Cant wait to see your show and PBR in Tallahassee!! Was wondering if you could sing "2008 finals all season long song"
Appreciate your talent-Keep up the good work.
Hey, maybe you might like to take the Wakulla Springs boat ride while in Talla. and see our alligators and manatee...
And we miss Shorty's Picks!!!
Bull riding is a great sport and it's awesome to be a PBR fan.I still don't understand why some folks just keep whineing about some of these things they do. Oh well ! Hey, have a great trip, we'll be watchin. See ya when u get here to Anahiem..
I really enjoyed the show this weekend in NC, and thank you for speaking up for the bullfighters! Those guys are amazing, never get enough credit, and certainly don't deserve the comments that were posted.
Just wanted to let you know that you are not a circus to everyone who goes to MSG. I went and was really disappointed in the crowd there. The big reason I went was because there are alot of things you miss when you watch it on TV, like the Entertainer for the PBR. The crowd At Madison did not let me hear or enjoy any of the event. I actually had to ask someone to watch their language in front of my children. Not to worry, I will be going to another PBR event. I'll just have to wait till we move back to the southwest before attending another show.
As for anyone saying anything bad about the bullfighters, that's just so incredibly wrong. Those guys do something very dangerous and noble. I'll bet money those they save don't have anything bad to say about them. I'm sure that means more to Frank, Joe and Shorty than anything some stranger has to say.
Ps. Really miss Shorty's picks on the Telecast. When are they going to show more of your act?
We have been watching the PBR for a few years and we watch it on tv. We started going to Billlings for the Nile. It's our wedding anniversary get away. We did not realize how funny you were and how much you add to the PBR until we saw you at the Nile in person. Looking forward to the Nile in Billings.

Great blog! It's nice to hear what your opinion is on some of the issues that are going on right now. I agree with you completely on the bullfighters, what those guys do is absolutely amazing! They don't get as much credit as they should. My husband and I are looking forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks in Anaheim and were wondering if you could maybe (please please please) wear your Ghillie suit (camouflage) during your performance on Saturday.
Keep up the awesomness =)
We live across the river in New Jersey. We are originally from Texas. We never managed to make it to an event in Dallas, but as soon as we move back west we will be going to an event.
When you first arrive at MSG you think the music and announcer's are too loud, until the crowd really arrives. You could hear that Flint and the announcer were speaking. You just couldn't understand what they were saying. There was a hum from the crowd.
And to be fair, I'm sure there were some true PBR fans just like us at the event. We just were not fortunate to have them sitting near us.
I'm not giving up on the live show, I'm just waiting for a better venue.

GREAT post and way to stick up for the guys!! I don't usually read the comment section, but had to go look for the one you mentioned.....
Not sure what that guy was watching, but I am first a bullfight fan, then a bullride fan.... I spend more time watching the skill of the bullfighters during a PBR event than the bullrides. I have not seen a PBR bullfighter "Lay over" a rider, as that poser, er, poster, claimed, in a long time....
As for his suggestion on having only two bullfighters at an event - the PBR buck a minimum of 40 bulls at each round, on days with the short round you have another 15 (not to mention rerides)... what happens if one of the bullfighters gets hurt on the first bull and there are still at least 39 left to buck?
Frank, Shorty and Joe are the best, but it's certainly not an ideal situation to work out there alone!
Also, wanted to add that it ROCKS that they put Shorty's pics back on!!!
First I must say - you are WAY better than Springsteen! We'd rather watch and listen to you any day! :)
I don't know where to find the discussions you mentioned in your blog, but I can comment on one, regarding the coverage on NBC. I agree with the poster that asked about their coverage - when you're on NBC we get about 1.5 hours whereas on VS we get 2 or more. We like to see more of the rides and less of the hype. You know I love Guilherme, but how many times during a 1.5 hr. program did we need to see build up to his ride of Bones? Once would have done it. I also much prefer Leah's behind the chutes coverage and interviews. We miss your "Flinterviews"!
Anyway, you know I'm one of your biggest fans and we'll be watching every week! We're looking forward to the Billings event and will look for you around town!
Juli, your Hometown Fan!
Bullfighters - can't do without them. Bullfighters are subject to the same injuries as are bull riders. Their injuries are many time worst than the riders they are protecting. Ask Rob (now retired due to his third broken neck). Ask Joe (injured in the finals) Ask Frank (how many times have seen him fly through the air -instead of the rider - as he protects the rider), Ask Shorty (he has had various injuries as well). Ask them about the hours of training! Their 'stunts' are highly trained bullfighter moves and very physical. Watch the contest for bullfighters! Do some research before speaking out on a topic you have shown so clearly you do not understand! Think about how brave these galant men are each time the chute opens and pray that neither the bull rider or the bullfighter gets injured. Write all the bullfighters a thank you note instead of criticize them! No bull rider will get on a practice bull without at least 2 protectors - bullfighters - present. Bullfighters work all the time, not just on weekends and are much appreciated by the bull riders.
The draft - some is ok. However, the finals. I wonder if anyone else ever thought of this: Would GM have won the buckle if he had not picked his bulls? GM can only ride in one direction. The luck of the draw is much more difficult for him. I did not agree with the bull riders being able to pick all the bulls until the final one. I think draw then draft, draw then draft, draw then draft --- would really make an interesting finals. Also, what would it be like to have a draw as to the order of the draft? It will make it more interesting than always going by standings. Random selection is scientifically more acurate. No bias. Give it some thought.
May God bless all the bull riders, bullfighters, entertainers (btw Flint, I love the way you always jump on the fence or the cage when a bull comes within 50 feet!! I would be right there with you!!!) announcers, and travelers this season. God bless our nation. We are fortunate indeed to be able to express our opinions so freely and to participate in any and all of our athletic events.
Live PBR is soooooo much better than TV... but thank goodness that we have TV so we can follow PBR all season.
PS I just caught, by chance, the 'BUCKED' show this weekend. WOW.... I really wish this show was in a better time slot. I really liked the personalities and information about each highlighted rider.
I would like to see all involved in PBR on this show. Please print something about it on the PBR site. Thanks.

We were so very happy to have you, the bullriders and bullfighters come to Tampa. I'll take you, the bull riders, bulls and bullfighters over the Super Bowl Halftimers anytime. You are "real" down to earth people.
One question, whose vest number is 4? Got his picture but couldn't remember who he is. Got your picture too with the "dancing fan". Thanks to all for a great night in Tampa. Hope to see you there next year. PBRfanJudy
Anyway, you can go to pbrnow.com & look at the top left of the screen under Competition, then 2008 Final Standings to see who placed where after the finals last season. Glad to hear y'all had fun in Tampa. Wish we could've been there!!!
Looking forward to watching you in St. Louis.

These girls are serious fans.
I want to thank you so much for choosing me for "Fan of the Night". I have been a fan of yours for years. My grandparnents flew me from Sacramento CA over to AZ for my birthday and to go with them to the PBR. I will never forget this as long as I live. I will take good care of the buckel and your hat. Guess I will have to make a red cape and wear it the next time you come to Sacramento. Thanks again Joshua
