Have you guessed the double-meaning in my title? Usually our broadcast booth is up in the rafters somewhere or, at times, off of the stands. Occasionally we get the 'VIP' treatment and get set up by our fabulous crew in one of the building's suites.
Wherever we end up each week, it's always part of the adventure.
It has been great over the past couple events in Fresno and Sacramento to be close enough to the action to watch you – the fans – interact with my cohorts before, during and after the show.
That's one of the things I love about this sport. We can all get so close. And the point is always driven home by how many people want to get 'up close' to Justin McKee, Ty, J.W., G-Man and Justin McBride.
It's been a great start to the telecasts on Versus and NBC.
I have had so much fun working with all these guys in the booth that I hope it is being conveyed on TV. It's been a great mix already with Ty, J.W. and Justin McBride in the booth, and it won't be long now before G-Man makes his mark on the 2009 telecasts.
You all know what great RIDERS they were, but it's not always easy to translate the knowledge they have "inside" and convey it clearly to millions watching at home within seconds of it all happening.
I'm honored to call these guys 'friends' and even more to work alongside them.
My best work on the telecast is usually when I just shut up and listen, but it's usually so much fun I'm eager to contribute.
We wouldn't have a TV show if it wasn't for all of you watching so please keep coming by to say, "Hello." I look forward to seeing you in Dallas and North Carolina in the next two weeks.

Anyway, thanks again for making our tv PBR event watching so enjoyable.
P.S. I was trying to refrain from commenting on this but J. McBride is not too good in the booth. Let's stop playing favorites on our comments fellas! When a bull rider does a good job, say it (even if you don't particularly like that rider OR the country they come from...) Anyone who watched this past weekend's events in California knows what I'm talking about... I'll leave it at that.
Additionally, when Justin McBride and J.W. Hart are in the booth together I get the popcorn and settle in for the duration. The two of them together are a scream! Agreeing with some other comments, Leah should be on all the broadcasts. I'm sure Donna whats-her-name is a fine person, but she is no match for Leah. The riders really respond to Leah. When she talks with them it feels more like a conversation than an interview.
Is Adriano Moraes on tap to join the broadcasting crew at any point?
My 2 cents: at events where there is a bull draft for the short go, return to showing the whole thing. Some of the broadcasts are starting to feel like highlights reels instead of actual events (not your fault, Craig, or any of the other announcers, I know; but, if the powers that be could know my opinion I would be gratified.) The worst is NBC with their measly 90 minutes of air time, but VS seems to be giving less bull and more bull**** in their two hour broadcasts. How many live events will be carried this season? I think I remember that the TV schedule used to show when an event would be aired live, but I can't find anything to show me that now.
Please keep up the good work. Even with my little complaints the PBR-BFTS is still the best thing on TV. I do now and then stop on the channels where they are showing that "other" bull riding group, but I just can't take listening to them: Donny Gay, bless his heart, has a voice that could shred cans, and they just don't communicate the same regard for the bulls and stock contractors that Hummer, McKee and Co. reflect. They are all about the riders and the PBR-VS broadcast team makes it clear that it's all about the sport: riders, bulls, contractors, judges, fans (oh, and Flint). Devalue any of those elements and you lose the heart and spirit of the PBR. The great thing about EVERYONE who is part of the broadcast team is that the variety of opinions and styles help illuminate the many aspects of the sport. If everyone in the booth had the same experiences, expertise, and opinions, it would be like watching paint dry.
Keep up the good work!
Justin was a great bull rider but not too much of a
commentator.
I, like many of us here, appreciate all the hard work you and the VS crew do. As to the idea that Justin McBride should be as good in the booth as he was on the back of a bull, I'd say let's let him learn his craft. I for one want to know what a former World Champion has to say.
Craig, one special request: I HATE the flying overhead camera!! I know ya'll are always looking for another vantage point to show us, but that's not it. One of the things that makes these bulls such amazing athletes is how much "air" they get. From overhead you get none of that. How much "drop" a bull generates has a ton to do with what kind of bull score we're going to see. The overhead camera takes the visual power the bull has away from the viewer.
Just my $.02

Keep up the good work guys and thanks Craig for the article,
