I'm better than that

I was pretty excited about having a good bull in the first round and in a one-night deal like that knowing that you get to pick your bull for the short round is pretty exciting. Boy did I waste a great opportunity. I was pretty disappointed in my performance.

I felt it was pretty pathetic, to tell you the truth, it was horrible.

I was going great in the chute and then they opened the gate. I don't know, I've been getting on some practice bulls lately – here at the house – and everything feels great and I've been riding good, but then go them bull ridings and I really think I'm trying too hard.

I'm wanting to win so bad that I'm trying too hard and I'm not having fun like I should be.

Any bull rider will tell you – ask Justin McBride or Guilherme Marchi – if you're not having fun then you're not going to do any good. You have to put out the effort and try, but if you over do it you're killing yourself. You just have to go have fun and do what you do.

I've been trying too hard and wanting to stay on and it's just taking its toll on me right now. If you think about it you get to worrying about it and things aren't going to go your way. You have to just forget about it and go do what you know you can do, and that's get on bulls and ride bulls.

All of us guys know what we can do or we wouldn't be where we're at. And we didn't get there by thinking about it.

It's just one of them deals. It's aggravating to get on a bull like I did in San Antonio and fall off and the gateman asks you to get up so they can shut the gate. It's frustrating.

I paid for today. My personal trainer about killed me because I embarrassed him too.

I hate to sound cocky, but I know I ride better than the performance I've been putting out. It's ridiculous. It really is horrible and I'm disappointed in myself because I know I can do a better job then what I've been doing and I need to get on the ball and get it done.

I buck bulls here at the house every Tuesday and I have kids that get on. I help them out and here lately I've been getting on with them because I need to.

There are five kids who live close by and one of them is doing pretty good. He's going to be buying his permit pretty soon. He's been coming out to my house for three years and he couldn't ride past the end of the chute gate when he started. He has no talent what so ever, but he's got a heart bigger than the state of Texas.

He'll get on seven or eight bulls and he loves it, craves it. He's been going to some rodeos and winning and he's about ready to buy his permit and start going to some bull ridings.

I enjoy helping all five them.

So I'm going to get on some more practice bulls this week and next week I'm going to take a vacation, but I'll come back the week after that and I've got my bull riding kinder and I'll be working on that and hopefully we'll get things turned around before Orlando.

Mike, I think I recall seeing you on a commercial saying that if you think about it, it's too late. If you could find a way to put the mind on "hold" and get on a bull like he's in your backyard and it's just for kicks, then I'll bet every muscle in your body will know just what to do.

Enjoy the break and come back and have fun--who cares win or lose, we already know you're one of the best. Stay well.

I can't even imagine how hard it must be to not make that whistle. I hope that with this time off you're able to rest your mind as much as your body and then come back strong.

Thank you for including the story about the kids you are helping. It was something I didn't know and it's always nice to hear about another side of a rider's life. You all seem to have such great hearts and spirits.

Enjoy your vacation and good luck in Orlando!

Mike, you have already proven you are a great rider. I agree with what you say and every bull rider that is not riding up to their expectations always say the same thing. I need to take one bull at a time and enjoy being with my friends and most of all have fun. Since you have been hurt I know you feel like it is a catch up game to get the points and try to move up in rankings. I am saying it again you are a GREAT BULL RIDER relax and keep that great smile on your face and you will have no problem with riding your bulls. You have plenty of time left in this year. Just do what comes natural.

You are a great rider. You just need to somehow get it out of your head that you HAVE to win. If you don't think you have to win then it will just come by itself. I think you know what you are doing wrong and you have the will to fix it. Form what I've seen (and I'm no expert) of you riding lately, you look like you are trying too hard and over riding. You don't look like you are having fun like you used to. Get things straight in your head and everything will fall into place, including the win. We all know you are one of the best riders out there. If you don't pressure yourself as hard as you are and start going at it like "I'm just going to do this because I love it" I'm sure it will all fall into place. Love reading your posts!

Hey Mike -
You hit the nail on the head - relax and have fun with it. You've got a ton of talent - the riding part will take care of itself. Enjoy the break here before Orlando - I have a good feeling that when you get on there you're going to do really well! See you in Tulsa!

Mike,
I bet by the time you get to Orlando you'll be able to ride the hair off of a pink polka-dotted flying buffalo!

Enjoy the time off with your family!

Keep your head up. On Tuesday when those kids get on there bulls at your house look into there eyes and you will see how bad they want it, and they are doing it for free. You will come around. I think what your donig with those kid is really cool, I wish I had a pro helping be out.

Mike I agree with Jayne, you have the solution right in your grasp...now go with it. I know you have had a rough year with injuries and things. Your body is trying to play catch up...and heal up and your mind is saying go go go. I hope you can take this time off to rest your mind, replenish your spirit, and then cover every darn bull you get on. Have a great time off and am looking forward to watching you guys in FL.

Well, Mike.....as they say, "if you ain't gonna cowboy up, get back in the truck" and I don't think you are ready to ride off into the sunset yet. You still got a lot of try and grit. So, pull your hat down tight and just "le doux" it. We know you can.

Mike, your an awesome rider! You are an inspiration to all kinds of people the way you always come back. Keep up the good work.

Mike I have been a fan of yours for many years. Since the first time you broke your neck. You are an outstand bull rider and you are just loaded with talent. I also admire how you are always helping others at the bull ridings. Thanks for sharing your feeling with us and the fact that you are helping to bring other bull rider in to sport. Dont give up and relax and you will win a lot of bull riding. God Bless You!

Mike, you have really had a lot of injuries and I know that weighs heavy on anyone. But you need to keep your toes out, your rope in your hand, and your riding arm out front. And for God sake keep your Head away from the head of the bulls. See to much of that. Just do what you know to do and keep daylight out from under your Wrangles and the Bull and honey you will make it every time. I love watching you. You amoung others are one of my favorites and to let you know there only about 6 of those and I am an old lady who has been watching and helping with rodeos for years. So take care and Keep the Faith.

Mike, I rode bulls full time then week-ends from the 60's through the the mid-80's. I think I am qualified to offer you an opinion. I couldn't agree with you anymore. You stated it. You have not been having fun lately. Loosen up, don't look so damn serious behind the chutes. You are a great bull rider. I wish they would give you more credit for your world championship, but I suppose from a business point of view the PBR comes first.

Sincerely,

John Sumerlin

Mike, I have known from the 1st time I saw you ride that you were destined to win the title as well as Buckle. It's you that needs to remember this always and like you say you just need to start enjoying it again. We LOVE you Mike, Stay healthy and happy, See you at the finals!!!

Mike,
I have been watching you ride for years. The key is to stay healthy. If you could have done that you would have already been a world champ. You have great riding skills. Just try not to think of the money or the title and have fun. You know your one of the best so just keep your hand close and get off that bull at the right time and place.
