Unlike human babies, young bucking bulls often do not get named at birth. Most young bulls get a brand number early in life and are known by that until they earn a name in the arena at age 2-4 years old.
At the recent ABBI Classic event in Duncan, OK, one semi-anonymous young bull known only as Page 499 may have earned himself a real name. Young 499 posted a bull score of 48 points and won the Classic event with an official score of 92.25.
A 48 point bull score is rare anywhere in the PBR, and extremely so in the ABBI Classic competitions. So it may be time to bestow a more impressive moniker on this baby bucker, because he is surely coming soon to a BFTS event near you.
People are also suprised to hear that I'm a bull riding fan. Like you, I tell them all they have to do is go to a live event and they will be hooked too.
Since attending my first event in Minneapolis on New Years Eve in 2006, bull riding has become my favorite sport - and it takes alot for a Wisconsinite (Green Bay Packer fan) to list anything other than Packer Football as their #1 sport !

How's it going? Thank you so much for the information on who to contact. I'll try to e-mail her sometime soon. I rarely get a spare moment here (Needless to say, I watch the PBR in the middle of night when my 1 year old gets me up-thank goodness for TiVo!) I love to watch bull riding for the bulls too. However my husband thinks that it is quite the opposite! :-) I was seriously considering going to Vegas this year, but I think that with the girls being so young, I'll wait until next year. (I have a one, two, and a six year old.) Hey, did you get to meet JW? He is one of my favorites. I love his sense of humor and was so happy to see him on Versus. Well, I had best get going. Take care and thank you again.
Never have heard that song. As a bull owner I've come up with some names,my husband has named some and even our friends have named a few.All were names as calves. We do it by their attitude and/ or appearance. All but our two latest have been out of our stock and the two new ones had real hooky attitude so one is Devil's Dust and the other is Demon Duster.

Hey, at live events, do they ever let you get close to the bulls? That would be really neat to get a "behind the scenes" tour. Did you all see one of my favorite bulls, Reindeer Dippin, this weekend?!? My family thought I was crazy screaming at the TV. :-) Way to go Reindeer...and, um, sorry Brendan---You'll get him next time...
Hey, I think AL is a good name for a bull. That would be a cute song too. (I love that video with Chevy Chase.) As far as naming the bulls, I'm surprised somebody hasn't set up an online bull naming website. "For $19.99, we'll name your bull for you. Just send us a picture and a description and you'll get your name within 48 hours." :)
Take care everyone and have a wonderful Monday.
Any news?
Hey Marilyn -
What;s this "...women taking over..." stuff!?! Sheesh! Next thing we know you'll be burning your tank tops!! Just kidding.
I have to disagree with your sentiments on Brendon Clark being thrown off Raeindeer Dippin. From a purely sport perspective when 2 athletes are exceedeing their normal level of performance it is something special. I really liked whatshername's interview with him before he round: how he was goaded by the other riders into picking Reindeer and his very obvious determination to ride that bull. I wish he had because we'll never know just how high a score that would have been.
He probably isn't the friendliest rider but I would nominate a couple of otheres who would beat him on the socially unacceptable category. BUT - from my brief interactions with some of them an just observing the vast majority and nothing sort of great to their fans!
At the Sacramento event you could watch them load and unload the bulls between their trailers and the arena. You cold get fairly close to them.
Hated to see Mike White go down. But, I was glad to hear Tandy Freeman acknowledge some caution where reptitive concussions may be a problem. Just about ewvery other pro sport have programs in place - despite the "macho" insistence by the athletes that they can keep playing. There really is long term danger where someone has had their bell rung one too many times. I know football and baseball have specific nuerological tests and standards relating to this. The last thing we want is a bunch of old cowboys wandering around their ranchesd babbling like idiots. Life IS precious.
Hey Caligirl - you up around Chico then? Isn't that the general area where the Moreno's have their ranch?
Justin - thanks for the Troubador update for the wider audience. Thanks Dude! Also noted the descriptive notation on the number of bulls left for each bull team to compete. That was better than my suggestion. Cool addition to the graphics. Very helpful.
So someone on the blog wants to own a bull! LOL! My wife does too since we have started follwing the PBR (Only our second year). We are in California but are looking for a couple of acres in Texas (Around Bryan/College Station) for our budding small horse breeding endeavors. And she has her heart set on a bull and a few cows. Sigh! There has to be something psychological here - my wife is 5 foot and 105 pounds and all our animals are large - horses, English Mastiffs (I swear they slobber more than bulls) and now she wants a bull! HELP! LOL
More later. Don Beavers, Walnut Creek, CA
It is exciting owning bulls. We raise ours and I love watching them as babies. You can tell with some from the moment they hit the ground. I have a cow who is the daughter of our bull TN Tornado and last June she calved in the morning and lef tthe baby( an hour old) to come get feed. He woke up and saw momma down by the fence and tha tlittle scamp hightailed it down the bottom bucking along the way. That's our White Lightning. Named immediately. Can't wait to breed his sister as she will come across the field bucking with all fours way off the ground.I swear some of these heofers and bulls have Lippanzaner genes!Ok ,just kidding but they sure buck like the horses performing their airs above the ground.
Not only is it confusing to the fans who know the bull by his name not his brand number, but I feel it is completely disrespectful of the original bull.
Sorry folks there will only be ONE Moody Blues, yet how many times has his name been re-used.
Do it like the real registries of horses and dogs, a name is used once and once only.
Go ahead and spell it different, but it sounds the same is ok with me, but make it different.
ie; Moody Bluz
Laugh, I'll let my wife, Yolanda, know you have volunteered! Of course I am also greatful. For some reason I end doing most of the animal care and training - she supervises. LOL Yolanda has had horses for more than 20 years. Since we only met 3 years ago I suddenly found myself on a steep learning curve to become a late in life cowboy. I'vee had a lot of fun. Animals have always taken to me and that has held true for the horses. In fact one of them follws me around like a puppy and will lay her cheek on my shoulder if I stand still. Neat!
Right now we only have 2 Arabs, 2 Quarter Horses and a Half-Arab (Quarterhorse) with another Arab due in 2 months. We are getting ready to step up the breeding program with our immediate plans to use Varian Arabian stallions which have a strong Polish bloodline.
So don't get lost since "I'll" (I mean Yoanda) will need help soon.
Hey, I used to live in Madison and Stamford, CT while working in NYC.
Don Beavers
Wow, you and Yolanda have horses, that is fantastic! I love horses as much as I love bucking bulls. I have a friend who has a ranch out in Coventry CT., she has 2 Quarter horses and lots of cows. She lets me ride when I go out there, I absolutely love it. Your very fortunate. I will keep that offer on the table, but tell Yolanda I'm not cheap..LOL So, you lived in CT? I actually work in Stamford, I work for Time Inc. I did the NYC train commute for a while, but had to give that up after 9/11. I just couldn't go back there. I'm still stuck in the corporate thing for a while, but I do love my job. My plan and hope is to make it out west when it's all said and done... New England is very nice though, I was born and raised here... Sounds like you have a nice life, I'm very happy for you! Have a good evening friend. :)
Your lucky. No more train commute into the city. I did that for a total of 5 years with a couple of years in Brussels inbetween. One nice thing, at least in those days was the New Haven Line train was the only one that had drinking on board. On the way home I'd grab a couple of cans of beer from one of the vendors on the platform in Grand Central and enjoy those on the way home while doing a bit of end of day work!
I would have loved to see the Battle of the Bulls in front of Penn Station. That had to be cool.
I enjoyed my time in Connecticut; especailly all those oysters that came out of Long Island Sound. YUM! Fortunately there are good oyster beds out here too.
I had done the corporate thing with "International Travel and Transfer" (ITT) for 25 years, with living in 20 different places for the good of the company, when I decided to move the the San Francisco area and sort of settle down (Almost successful at that). Now, one more move with more open spaces, fewer people and less polical nonesense.
Oh, I told Yolanda you may have volunteered. ;-)
Cheers, Don
How are things going? Everyone here has been really sick the last week, so I haven't had time to post anything. I was having a bummer of a week until I read my e-mail about the event in Glendale! I was almost crying tears of happiness. lol I can't wait to attend my first BFTS event. It will be fun. Does anyone have any suggestions for a newbie to a live event? The ticket prices have a huge range-Do you just have to check the venue? I was thinking of going cheaper the first night and more expensive the final night. What do you think? I could probably afford the $100 seats for both nights, but would feel guilty... We'll see :-) Thanks, Marilyn for letting me know about Glendale too. I was sure surprised that they were actually going there. I e-mailed that one address that you gave me, but they never got back to me about why they weren't going to Phoenix this year. Perhaps this deal was in the making and they didn't really have an answer yet. Oh, well, I am just happy to know that it worked out....So, thank you to the higher beings that decided the BFTS should come to AZ!!!!! :-)
Since I live in So.Cal, I usually go to the Anaheim event, but last year we drove out to the Glendale event. It was worth the gas money! In Anaheim you can hardly get to the rails to get autographs, but in Glendale, it was not an issue. I got my t-shirt signed by all the riders. We've had the cheaper seats and the more expensive seats. If you don't spend a lot of money on tickets on a regular basis, it's best to pony up the extra and get those pricey seats. Especially for your first time. Have a wonderful time...I hope your favorite rider wins!
I'm going to be a bit of contrarian on the tickets issue. Frankly, I have been disappointed with $ 100 seats. The $ 50 seats I have bought, usually for Saturday, have gotten me a much better view and experience.
For Kansa City I bought ourtickets through the PBR Fan Club, well in advance, and they weren't anything to shout about. One problem there was wee were directly in line with the chuttes which prevents you from seeing the big screen displays that are hung over the chutes. There is a lot of info put up there and we couldn't see a darn thing. Also those seats were about half-way up the section from the arean.
The size of the arena is a factor and how it is configured for the event.
The best seats we've had were in Sacramento on Saturday. Fifty dollar seats. Fifth row right at the bend where the side becomes the far end of the arean. Now Sacramento wasn't that big an arena so we were impressed with what we could see.
Also, the far end of the arean is Flint's end and there is always (non-stop) going on with him. The rider, in Sacremetno Gilbert Carillo, and Flint carried on a lot adding to that experience.
One lucky fan in the front row at the end of the area in Sacramento got up close and personal with one of the bulls who tried to exit the area into her lap. She was covered in slobber sine the bull got its front legs hooked over the rail. WOW! (For that event on Sunday we $ 100 tickets and ended up in the very last row. Major disappointment. Fortunately I had binoculars with us.)
Maybe there is a trick to getting "good" tickets, but so far we haven't found it. Luck of the draw.
BUT - the experience is great and as mentioned the pregame show is super. One other hint, stay in the hotel listed on the web site for the event with the PBR rate. ONe, the rates are good and you really will see lots of riders, the bullfighters and sorts of others. Tnat is free!
Don
Thank you so much for all of the information on the tickets. I can't wait to go and popped for the more expensive ones for Saturday night- I just can't leave the girls for two nights. I am positive that no matter where we sit, it will be fun though. Judy-Are you going to Glendale this year too? I can't wait to get some autographs for my daughter's PBR shirt. :-) Well, take care everyone and thank you again.
