Massive riding streak in 2008

Among the people who really look at the numbers in bull riding (me and one other guy), there has been one major topic of discussion so far this season. Riding percentages have been up around 10% in the PBR in 2008.

That may not seem like much, but typically the riding percentage of all riders in all PBR events is around 30%, and to this point in 2008 it's been hovering around 40%. On the Built Ford Tough level, it's gone from the usual 37% to close to 50% at times. That's really quite an increase.

It's like all the bull riders have suddenly gotten better.

What are the reasons? Well, you may think that it's because of the draft rounds, but that isn't it – the riding percentages in those rounds is really no different than everywhere else. My theory is that it's partly because of the time of year; it's early in the season, and guys that are hurt are not riding hurt as much right now.

We've also been seeing a yearly increase in the number of bulls that are bred to buck, and with this being the start of a new season for them, there are many new young bulls making their PBR debut this time of year as well. So I think that over the course of the season it will level out – that although the bull riders are having their way right now, soon it will be the bull's time.
